Many engineering colleges considering closure in Tamil Nadu

COIMBATORE: Tamil Nadu will get five more engineering colleges, even as several in the state are looking at closing down. While some question the rationale of allowing new institutions when many seats remain vacant, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) officials continues to defend this policy.

On one hand when seven new institutions have been approved, Three institutions have been allowed to close in the state.

Many engineering colleges in the state are facing losses and are looking for buyers. According to private college owners, many are unable to find buyers and are forced to seek permission to shut shop.

Around 80,000 of the 2.05lakh seats in the state were vacant during 2013-14 in engineering colleges under Anna University, Chennai. As per former human resource development minister Pallam Raju's answer to a question in the Lok Sabha during the monsoon session in 2013, the number vacant seats in technical institutions approved by All-India Council for Technical Education across the country had risen from 1,91,086 in 2012-13 to 3,10,741 seats in 2013-14.

"Opening an engineering college is a suicidal move, except for premier groups," said T D Eswaramoorthy, joint secretary of Engineering Colleges in Coimbatore and chairman of Easa College of Engineering and Technology. Many start new institutions with the perception that it is a business that will give them visibility, but they lack the clarity required to create and sustain the credibility of the institution.

Many academics feel the policy of approving new institutions should be stalled. E Balagurusamy, former Anna University vice-chancellor, said AICTE had taken several steps in recent years to improve the quality of technical education. "When colleges are being closed down, there is no need for new institutions. I do not agree with this policy of AICTE of 'survival of the fittest'." There is huge unemployment, and even among those employed, many are underemployed.

Some say students and parents should be cautious about joining institutions without a solid reputation. Baldev Raj, chairman, board of governors, Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, said students should enquire about the institution they plan to join. "Students who want to pursue engineering, should make sure the institution they join can deliver quality education," he said.

AICTE approves 7,154 more engineering seats in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: Here's some good news! The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has approved increased intake capacity in existing colleges by 5,354 seats, taking the total number of approved seats for engineering to 70,115.

The 70,115 capacity includes 1,800 seats in the six new colleges approved by the AICTE.

At present, there are 62,951 engineering seats. Officials said that of the six new colleges, three will be in Ahmedabad, while one each will be in Rajkot, Vallabh Vidyanagar and Navsari.

Officials said that the AICTE has already issued letter of intent for these six colleges and now the apex body will send the final approval.

Officials said also some of the new colleges will also be given approval in diploma category.

They said that with the capacity of 70,000 odd seats, only 69,741 have cleared their examination from Gujarat board. Of these 69,741 students, only 63,000 are eligible for admission.

Sources said that this year, students have applied in faculties which are most sought-after, including civil, mechanical, electrical and computers. Officials said that in 2007-08, the number of students who wanted admissions were more than the available seats. But now, almost all students who clear their examination with 45% or above marks make it to engineering colleges. Despite this, over 9000 seats had fallen vacant last year.

However, officials said that the vacant seats were mainly in colleges which do not have good infrastructure or are not located within the city.

This year too, it is expected were expectation that around 12000 odd seats may lie vacant and this would be in the lower branches where students prefer not to take admission.

Private universities beat IITs in number of research papers

CHENNAI: Barring Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and a few IITs, most universities and colleges in the country are partial to teaching.

Now, some self-financing institutions are making an effort to look towards the premier league of research. Abstracting and indexing database Scopus shows that VIT University, for instance, has 495 publications till the end of May, with more publications to its name than IIT-Madras, IIT-Roorkee and IIT-Kanpur.

As in earlier years, IISc tops the list of Indian universities with 765 publications, followed by IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Bombay and IIT-Delhi. Private universities like Sastra, Thapar, SRM, Amity and Manipal also find place among the top institutions, some with more publications than some IITs and most NITs.

"Encouragement from the management in the form of seed money and stipend for research scholars has boosted the research output rate," said associate dean of research at VIT University S Babu. VIT's management has supported research scholars by instituting research awards up to 20,000, buying lab equipment and offering further funds to expand the scope of research whenever a candidate submits a research paper. Last year, the university's count was 1,538, a 260% increase compared to its research output four years ago.

Scientists appreciate the trend, calling it 'positive'. Kavita Mehra, chief scientist at Delhi-based National Institute of Science, Technology and Development Studies, which undertakes a ranking of Indian universities based on research, said, "Public funded research needs to be supplemented by research through private resources, be it an educational institution or industry. In fact, it started late in India. The only thing is that the quality of research and priority of research needs focus."

Academics also countered the argument that emphasis on research will take away the focus from teaching. "Good teaching is a natural byproduct of good research and the benefit should flow to undergraduate students, who should be actively involved in research," said S Vaidhyasubramaniam, dean of planning and development, Sastra University.

Mehra said the quality of teaching improves when faculty members are engaged in research as they will be abreast of the latest developments and help students understand the relationship between theory and application. "Such faculty will prepare the knowledge force to take up research as a career than just look for lucrative packages. It creates a conducive environment for the future workforce of India," she added.

Private universities have been upping their research output in the hope that it will help them get recognised at the global level and draw foreign students. Most global rankings give importance to research output and paper citations. It also attracts funding in the form of grants. Vaidhyasubramaniam said that it is time funding agencies promote performance-based funding for research. "They should discard the practice of discriminating between institutions based on whether they are public or private," he added.

Private institutions have introduced project-based learning at the undergraduate level.

They have also made research-based learning at the master's level mandatory. VIT has made it mandatory for all MTech and MSc students to publish papers at the end of every semester.

But, private institutions lag behind in the H-index, a parameter to assess performance of researchers based on the number of times a published paper is cited by peers or other researchers. For instance, if VIT University's H-index is 39, it means that 39 of its 4,846 publications have been cited 39 times by peers or research scholars. This is a good indication of the quality of published papers.

World’s Youngest CEO

World’s Youngest CEO
वो World Bank की ICT Advisory Council के BOARD MEMBER हैं
European Parliament and International Association for Human Values
World Economic Forum.
Website
जब मैं चौदह साल का था तब US की एक कंपनी NetworkSolutions से मुझे part -time job का offer मिला, वो US में मेरी education भी sponsor करने को तैयार थे .
Market:
American news-paper और BBC मेरे बारे में काफी कुछ बता रहे थे “World’s youngest CEO at 14 from a middle class background” मैंने कभी lime-light में आने के बारे में नहीं सोचा था, मेरे लिए तो एक कंपनी स्टार्ट करना मेरे passion का हिस्सा था.
Europe, Middle East, the US, Canada, the UK, Australia,आदि जगहों पर फैले हुए हैं.
