The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has no longer the authority of affiliating all the Engineering Colleges across the country. Now, in place of AICTE, the state technical universities will have the authority to approve and affiliate engineering colleges fall within their territory, declared vice-chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Dr H Devaraj.
While addressing the Indian Science and Engineering Fair, which was organized by the Agni College of Technology jointly with the Science Society of India (SSI) in Chennai on 11 January, Devaraj told that engineering colleges will not have to seek AICTE’s permission for renewal of the affiliation each year.
The UGC meet that held on 10 January came up with this decision and it would come into effect within 10 days, as informed by Devaraj.
In the meeting, the UGC approved a regulation under which all the powers of quality control in technical education, including engineering, management and pharmacy will be handed to the university only.
The universities only, will have to now assess the parameters such as infrastructure, faculty strength, admission process, lab and library facilities, etc, of the technical colleges which are seeking approval to run technical courses.
Earlier, the AICTE used to grant to engineering and management courses of various institutions each year to permit them to admit students for the next academic session.
