20 new IIITs across the country, Tamilnadu’s first IIIT to be setup at Srirangam

Reportedly state government has started process to set up first IIIT of state at chief minister J. Jayalalithaa’s Srirangam. It is likely to start by May next year. The institute will have Electronics and Communication Engineering, Information Technology and Computer Science as specialties with an intake of 60 seats each.


The state government has allotted 56 acres of land in Srirangam and the institute will be initially hous­ed on the Bharathidasan Institute of Technology (BIT) campus in Tiruchy.
Union HRD ministry has announced 20 new IITs across the country, all IIITs will be set up on a public private partnership (PPP) with 50 per cent fund from the Centre, 35 per cent from the state governments and the rest from the industry.
“During the first four years of setting up each IIIT, the Union government has assured to provide partial support towards recurring expenditure up to Rs 10 crore for each IIIT depending on actual requirement”, a senior HRD official said.
