GATE 2014: Some Myths and Many Facts about M.Tech

The frenzy for GATE 2014 is just about to start on September 2, 2013 when the online GATE 2014 applications will be available. To be conducted by IIT Kharagpur for 2014, GATE 2014 will be the gateway to many aspiring engineers and would be scientists to join the M.Tech or MS by Research courses.

Who wants to write the GATE Exam?

It is commonly known that the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is the entrance examination to give if:
  • One wanted to pursue Post Graduation namely M.Tech or MS by Research.
  • If one wanted a good secure job in the Public Sector Units (PSUs) Check this

Some Facts about GATE 2013:

To get an idea for GATE 2014, one can check the facts and figures of GATE 2013. The official stats say that 12,00,728 students registered for GATE 2013 and only 82.02% namely 9,84,855 candidates actually appeared for it. Now for the crucial part- only 13.88% ie. 1,36,699 candidates qualified for it.

Other PG Entrance Exams
:
Many universities and institutes take the GATE scores but some have their own exams. Common ones are
AP PGCET: Conducted by the University College of Engineering, Osmania University on behalf of the APSCHE, this exam offers admissions to the PG courses in colleges of Andhra Pradesh.
Karnataka PGCET: Conducted by the Karnataka Examination Authority, the entrance offers admissions to the various PG courses across the state of Karnataka.
PGEE: Conducted by the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, this exam allows admissions to the M.Tech programmes at the institute.
VITMEE: VIT University conducts this for selection and admissions to the M.Tech programmes at the university.
TANCET: Conducted by Anna University, this exam is for the admissions to the PG courses in Tamilnadu.

Benefits of M.Tech:

  • A carry forward of the technological knowledge that comprises B.Tech can happen with M.Tech. Part research and part study makes it more lucrative rather than simply studying which is what happens for most undergraduate programs.
  • Another fact is that students pursuing M.Tech are generally paid stipend which may be low by industry standards but covers up expenses and is pretty useful unlike undergraduation when students are completely dependent on their parents.
  • Expenses of studying M.Tech is also comparatively low with around 40K per semester on an average inclusive of hostel fees and other expenses.
  • Good Placements are one benefit but only if the candidates have good grades. Most companies do prefer good and technologically sound people who are accustomed to deadlines and tight work schedules.

M.Tech Courses and Quality of Education
:
The GATE 2014 lists out 22 papers for which candidates can appear and pursue M.Tech or MS. As the figures for GATE 2013 show, it is not at all easy for candidates to qualify. The entrance examinations to M.Tech courses are by themselves tough.
A common myth is that quality of education is not good especially for M.Tech students other than IITs. There are questions about the infrastructure too. First and foremost, yes, the IITs do have excellent faculty but so do the many other colleges/universities. The NITs and other centrally funded institutes possess good faculty too. Many private universities have made it a point to offer good facilities and teaching faculty. Some states have well established deemed universities as well as private colleges that possess good infrastructure.
Note: An important point to be noted is that the institute to study in definitely matters. Since not everyone can get into an IIT, M.Tech aspirants should also keep other options open after careful research.

Is M.Tech too tough?
M.Tech improves the technical knowledge of candidates while preparing them with a practical aspect through research. To gain all this, candidates have to work hard. Though factors that play a role are the effort s of the candidates, the courses chosen, projects done and such. Good scores denote the strength of the candidate in the chosen field and that is never easily available. To say that studying will be rigorous or too easy is generalizing and not at all applicable to everyone.
In fact, the truth is that by the time a candidate reaches the post graduate level, the understanding of the various subjects and their role becomes clearer. An M.Tech qualification comes with better understanding of the subjects and application of the same to the projects done.

Can M.Tech Qualifications Assure Good Placements
?
The myth that M.Tech qualified people are found to be teaching only is just what it is - A Myth. Most professors who teach at the top universities and good institutes are people who have chosen teaching as their careers and many have become guiding forces for their students. The other fact is that they also have further qualifications in the form of Ph.D which they do to improve their skill sets in turn bestowing the additional knowledge to their students.
The IITs and many top institutes have an excellent track record for placements of M.Tech qualified people. The deterrent as it may seem comes with the fact that placements are never separate for the Post graduates or the Undergraduates, though the preference is always for the post graduates. Still, with a slight advantage of qualification and good scores, a good placement can be achieved with better chances of growth on account of the M.Tech qualification.
It is also a fact that candidates have to clear the selection criteria of the companies that come in to recruit as per their requirements. Merely possessing the M.Tech qualification does not give any candidate an advantage.

Further studies after M.Tech?
Candidates who are interested in further studies can go in for Ph.D in India or abroad. Good qualified people are appreciated by all universities and it is only to their advantage to have a well qualified M.Tech candidate researching for them. The R & D area is very much under rated and under developed in the country. Many companies are seriously recruiting people with Ph.Ds for their R & D division. So a good placement is one advantage along with a good career chart.

Therefore it is advisable to go for an M.Tech only if one is serious about it in terms of study, effort and time. Candidates who do so end up with qualifications that are sought out not just in India but abroad too.

MT CET 2013: More than 50,000 vacant after the Third Counselling!

Published On: 29-Jul-2013,
As per the data provided by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Maharashtra, around 50,603 seats are vacant at the end of the third round of the MT CET 2013 Counselling. More than 2.80 lakh students had appeared for the MT CET 2013 examination for admissions to the engineering courses in the state. Out of these, not even half have taken up admissions. The figure is slightly higher from last year when around 44,000 seats were left vacant.
As per reports, two new engineering colleges were atrted in the state while the intake in the existing ones was increased with more than 10,000 seats. This decision came on the heel of the AICTE’s permission to increase the capacity with a second shift. Around 7,500 seats have been cancelled voluntarily by the colleges as per the latest reports.
A first for leading colleges like VJTI, Mumbai, and CoE, Pune where vacancies lead to a third round of admissions while IITs and NITs admissions were late on account of the controversies dogging the CSAB allotments and percentile issues along with other delays. Even the IITs witnessed an extra round of admissions as many students opted out of branches they didn’t like but were allotted. According to the DTE statistics, students have given the least preference to branches like IT and electronics and telecommunications (E&T) while the maximum preference was for core branches like civil and mechanical

All About Normalization for JEE Main 2013

 1. What is Normalisation?
𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒆 𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝟔𝟎% 𝒐𝒇 𝑩𝒐𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒔=𝟔𝟖𝟔𝟓𝟏𝟑𝟕𝟏𝟏∗𝟏𝟎𝟎
Normalisation as used in the Indian context is a process for ensuring that students are neither advantaged nor disadvantaged by the difficulty of exams that they do for the Boards. This process is used in other countries with similar issues as in India.
𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒆=𝟓𝟎.07
2. Normalisation Process requires us to know the following
Percentile Score
Percentile score of a Candidate in a Board or JEE (Main) will reflect what Percentage of Candidates have scored below that Candidate in that Board or JEE (Main) Examination.
A Percentile score is the value of below which a certain Percent of observations fall. For example, the 20th Percentile is the value (or score) below which 20 Percent of the observations may be found.
The Percentile of a Candidate will be calculated as

Example : Suppose we have , 13711 Candidates in a Board ABCD and a Candidate who has scored 60% of Board marks has 6865 Candidates below him; his Percentile score will be calculated as follows

Table 1: Percentage and corresponding Percentile score of 13711 Candidates of Board ABCD. Board Percentage (B0)  No of candidates below candidate the with Board Percentage B0  Percentile Calculation corresponding to B0  Percentile Score

No Bengal dreams for JEE rank holder

Though the state is proud of its young achievers and chief minister Mamata Banerjee has even urged them to build their careers in Bengal, but the latter think otherwise.

Suvajit Majumdar, who has bagged the third position in WBJEE 2013, is determined to research on particle physics from MIT or Harvard University. That done, he plans to spend a few more years abroad to give his knowledge a concrete shape before returning to the country. However, Suvajit doesn't nurture any dreams in the state as he believes West Bengal to be bereft of proper career and research opportunities.

"Those aspiring to be scientists or researchers like me have no future in the state where they will end up with a lecturer's job in any college or university. A few years back, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics wanted around 200 acres of land from the government to set up the country's first high-energy synchrotron or particle accelerator that uses electromagnetic fields to propel charged particles to high speeds and contain them in well-defined beams. But the project had to be scrapped due to the unavailability of land in the state," said the former student of Central Model School, Barrackpore.

Suvajit credited the school for his excellent result because it allowed him to prepare for the JEE in his own way and he did not have to face any difficulty after skipping some classes. He also took tuition from FIITJEE for two years to make his dream come true. At present, the boy is waiting for the results of JEE Advanced to be declared on June 23 and hopes to be among the 100 top rankers.

To begin with, the Durga Nagar resident may take up general physics from IIT-Bombay and then apply to esteemed foreign institutes for extensive research on particle physics. Initially, he chose IISC, Bangalore, which has good scope for research, but he missed the deadline to submit his admission form.

"I am planning to contact IISC's higher authority and it will be good if they consider me on the basis of my result," Suvajit added.

However, he has decided not to take up a job after completing a four-year engineering course. Suvajit would rather be in the academics and devote his life to discovering unknown facts about particle physics.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has urged the brilliant students of West Bengal to stay in the state, but they think otherwise. Suvajit Majumdar, a student of Central Model School, Barrackpore, who came third in the WBJEE 2013, has decided to research on particle physics from MIT or Harvard University and then spend a few more years abroad to give his knowledge a concrete shape. If he returns to India, he has firmly decided to settle outside the state, which is bereft of proper career opportunities and research avenues.

On being asked about his repugnance towards West Bengal, the 18-year-old boy replied, "Those aspiring to be scientists or researchers like me have no future in the state where they will end up with a lecturer's job in any college or university. A few years back, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics wanted around 200 acres of land from the government to set up the country's first high energy synchrotron or particle accelerator that uses electromagnetic fields to propel charged particles to high speeds and contain them in well defined beams. But the project had to be scrapped due to the unavailability of land in the state."

Though the students of Central Model School, Barrackpore usually get satisfactory ranks in the Joint Entrance Examinations, this is the first time in the history of the school's 22-year-old journey that one of its students made it to the list of toppers with such a significant position. Suvajit Majumdar joined the school's science stream in class XI after completing his class X from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Dum Dum. He has secured 89.2 per cent in the All India Senior School Certification Examination under CBSE is but he is not happy with the evaluation of his physics paper, which he wants to review.

After the WBJEE resulte were declared on June 8, the authorities of Central Model School, Barrackpore were happy with Suvajit Majumdar bringing accolades for the school. Sharmila Rakshit who took charge of the institution as principal last year, celebrated his achievement in the school by feeding him rasgullas.

Suvajit Majumdar, a resident of Durga Nagar credited the school for his excellent result because it allowed him to prepare for the JEE in his own way and he did not have to face any difficulty after skipping some classes. He also took tuition from FIITJEE for two years to make his dream come true on June 8. The boy is waiting for the results of JEE Advanced to come out on June 23 and he hopes to be among the 100 top rankers. He is contemplating studying general physics from IIT-Bombay and then applying to esteemed foreign institutes for doing extensive research on particle physics. Initially, he chose IISC, Bangalore which has good scope for research, but he missed the deadline to submit his admission form and that is why he is now thinking about IIT- Bombay. "I am planning to contact IISC's higher authority and it will be good, if they consider me on the basis of my result," he said.

Suvajit does not want to take up a job after completing a four-year engineering course, rather he will remain in the field of academics and devote his life to find out some new or unknown facts about particle physics. Even when the exams were round the corner, he didn't follow any regular study routine. He loves to listen the golden oldies of Hemanta Mukherjee, Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar and Mohd Rafi. The 'soothing effects' in their numbers help him relax easily after studying for hours on end

JEE errors could cost students all-India rank

The model answers for the JEE (advanced) released on Tuesday reveal errors in two questions, one in the maths and another in the physics paper, that could cost students six marks and make a significant impact on their all-India rank.

Also, for the second year in a row, JEE organizers have persisted with fixing subject and overall cutoffs even before assessing the performance of students. Till 2011, cutoffs were based on the performance of all candidates and after evaluating all answer sheets.

Only around 5,000 of the 1.5 lakh students who took the JEE (advanced) would make it to the premier IITs.

This year, subject cutoffs for maths, physics and chemistry are 12, 11 and 6 respectively for general, OBC and SC/ST students. The aggregate cutoffs are fixed at 35%, 31.5% and 17.5% for general, OBC and SC/ST candidates. With 360 as the total marks, it comes to 126, 114 and 63 respectively for general, OBC and SC/ST candidates.

As pointed out by many senior IIT faculty members last year, the flipside is that each candidate who scores above above the cutoffs gets an all-India rank and based on that he/she will be allotted an IIT and course.

But not every student with an all-India rank will make it to the IITs since rankings go up to 25,000 and above, whereas there are only a little over 5,000 seats to be filled in these top-rung institutes.

In the model answers, it has been found that question number 48 (paper I) of maths shows three correct answers, A, C or AC. But the question is such that there could only be one correct answer. If a student ticks more than one correct answer, he is penalized with negative marks.

The second error in the JEE (advanced) is that question number three (paper II) of physics has been shown to have two correct answers - ABCD or BCD.

"How can option A be both right and wrong? Besides, candidates who spend time to correctly solve the question would have realized that all the other options are correct as well. These students would have avoided marking any of the options out of fear of being marked negatively. Such a situation creates unnecessary ambiguity and doesn't test the candidates' knowledge," a faculty member from IIT-Bombay said.

IIT-Indore students develop technology for laptop and cellphones

Do you find your laptop or cellphone running slow and consuming more battery? If yes, then here are two students of Indian Institute of Technology, Indore (IIT-I), working on a technology that will allow users to store four times the data without slowing down the processor.

Sarfraz Qureshi and V Sai Kiran have developed Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) design that intends to make device run faster, increase capacity of data transfer, enhance memory density and reduce the power consumption to half. Unlike conventional memory system, the developed design will need fabrication in circuit architecture instead of transistor. "We have tested the project in our lab and it has given wonderful results. The project was also appreciated by the President who had a look of it while on his visit to the institute."

The project which started a year ago, is now in the final stage and the students are completing the procedure to file their application for patent in USA. Qureshi said, "We and our faculty have confirmed that such kind of work has not been done by anyone. We have completed the procedure to patenting the technology and we are going to file our application." V Sai Kiran helped build the design. They were assisted by two PhD scholars Chandrabhan Kushwah and Bhupendra Singh Reniwal. The project was supervised by assistant professor Santosh Vishwakarma.

Elaborating more about the project, Qureshi said, "I and Kiran got the idea of developing the design while we were interning. We both discussed the idea with the faculty. We did not spend much in developing the design. The institute has developed digital lab which has licensed circuit designing software. We worked on it and literally spent nothing to develop design. We are thankful to the faculty that gave us flexibility to work on the topic," said Qureshi. He intends to study further instead of joining job in the industry and conduct research in the field of physics.

Karnataka students bag COMEDK top ranks

Soon after the results of the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMED-K) examination were announced on Tuesday, the toppers got into a celebratory mood.

Interestingly, the first 10 rank holders from the engineering stream were all from Karnataka. However in the medical and dental stream three out of the top ten rank holders were from Karnataka.

Topping the engineering stream, Abhijeet Shenoi, a student of National Public School, Indiranagar, said that he enjoyed working hard as he enjoyed his subjects. “I mostly prepared for the Joint Entrance Exam which helped me score an edge during the COMEDK.”

The medical topper, Neeli Devee Krishna Sashidhar from Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh, candidly admitted that he expected to top this exam.

He mentioned that he studied for 15 hours a day and was happy on his achievement. Hailing from a family of doctors, Sashidhar aspires to be a cardiologist.

“I will, however, wait for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences results before I make my decision,” he added.
High flyers speak

While most toppers attributed their success to the training at their coaching centres, some other said that their persistence and rigorous study schedule helped them ace the paper. Sucheth M. Kuncham, the second rank holder of the engineering stream plans to give up his COMEDK seat as he is banking on his good CET ranking to get a seat. “There was a lot of persistence involved. We don’t have power connection at home, and I used to study with the help of a solar lantern and a torch. Hopefully, the government will take notice of this,” said an avid cricket fan who plans to pursue a future career in the DRDO.

Meanwhile, the second rank holder in the medical stream, Hemanth Amardeep Santhoor, a student of National Public School, Indiranagar, said that he has already chosen to study at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER). Aspiring to be a neurosurgeon, he said, “Consistent studies, understanding conceptual intricacies and constantly practicing Multiple Choice Questions have helped me”.
Increase in candidates

This year, 82,262 candidates appeared for the examinations, an increase of 5,000 compared to last year.

While all engineering aspirants are eligible to take part in the counselling, only 41 per cent of the medical aspirants who appeared for the exam are eligible for counselling.

A press release from COMEDK said that the counselling for medical, dental and engineering seat selection would commence on July 2.
