CBSE board is proposing two Main tests for 2014, one in February and one in April

Arita Sarkar in Mumbai Mirror, 12th september, 2013

It was stressful enough for students when the single Joint Entrance Examination for IIT was split into two-the Mains and the Advanced - this year. Now, the CBSE board, which conducts the JEEMains, is proposing two Main tests for 2014, one in February and one in April. The final decision on this will be taken at a meeting of the Joint Entrance Examination Apex body on September 17.

A senior CBSE official confirmed that such a proposal is afoot. "The logic is that candidates can take both the exams and the best score of the two will be considered for the JEE-Advanced. Students get a second chance," he said.

An additional test will add to the blitzkrieg of exams that students have to answer, and pile up preparation pressure on them. The board exams for the state board, CBSE as well as ICSE are conducted in February. Students of ICSE and state board will have to study separate portions of the CBSE syllabus to prepare for the first of the JEE Mains, also to be held in February.

The CBSE official said it would be ensured that the JEE-Main exam dates in February do not clash with the February board exams. But that does not ease studying pressure for students. It merely allows them to take both the exams.

The other possible fallout of a JEEMain in February is that preoccupation with it could affect a students' board exam performance adversely. And this in turn will have an impact their chances of qualifying for IIT which has introduced a policy this year that successful candidates, even if they have cleared the JEE-Advanced, must be among the top-20 percentile scorers in the class XII exams of their respective boards.

While the JEE-Main exam qualifies students for engineering institutes like NITs and IIITs, IIT aspirants have to nail both the Main and the Advanced, and also do well in their class XII board exams.

Dr. Ashok Wadia, principal of Jai Hind College said the students will be in despair about what to concentrate on, the boards or JEE Mains.

"Sure, students will get a second chance with two exams, but I would prefer one exam, as it is very stressful to appear for multiple exams," said Krishnakant Saboo, a third year student of electrical engineering at IIT Bombay.

While the JEE Mains, an eligibility test for the JEE Advanced, is conducted by the CBSE, JEE Advanced is jointly conducted by the seven zonal IITs.

883 studetns out of top 1000 in JEE Advanced are from Private schools

Akshaya Mukul, TNN Aug 3, 2013, 05.04AM IST
(Female students, CBSE figures…)
NEW DELHI: Faced with widespread criticism of the normalization method in JEE Mains, CBSE has now claimed that due to the new pattern, representation of students from rural backgrounds as well as of girl students has shown remarkable improvement.
In 2013, there were 136 students with rural background among the top thousand rankers. In 2012, there were only 90 students from rural India. Urban student representation went down to 864 this year from 910 in 2012. Rural representation also showed gradual growth among first two, three and four thousand rank holders. Among the top 5,000 rankers, there were 861 students from rural background. In percentage terms, 17.22% students among the top 5,000 were from rural India compared to 13.4% last year. Urban representation among the top 5000 came down to 82.78% in 2013 from 86.6% last year.
Female students, CBSE figures showed, increased their presence among the toppers. This year, among the top thousand rankers, there were 136 female students, and 749 among the top 5,000 rankers. Male representation among the top thousand rankers came down to 864 (86.4%) in 2013 compared to 904 (90.4%) last year and 924 (92.4%) in 2011.
Students from government schools are also beginning to make a slow but steady presence among the top rankers. But the rate is slower. Last year, 89 government school students were in the first one thousand. In 2013, it went up to 117. In the top 5,000, there were 624 students from government school background, up from last year's 545. Private school students continue to dominate. This year, of the first one thousand rankers, 883 students were from private schools, a marginal decline from last year's 911.
Meanwhile, the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, which had put out a detailed story about the evolution of normalization method, removed the link from its website under pressure from the HRD ministry. But the damage was done as the link has been downloaded and is all over social media sites.

Cut off revised for IIT

Source: Times of India
Only those students who are among the top 20 percentilers in the Intermediate Public Examination (IPE) while considering all the subjects would be eligible to take admission in the IITs in the country this year. This means that a general category student would have to score 437 marks or above out of 530 to become eligible.

Earlier, the top 20 percentile criteria took into account only the marks scored in Maths, Physics and Chemistry. But the authorities have decided to take into account all the subjects now. Following this, sources in the Board of Intermediate Education detailed the cut-off marks for students of different categories. While it would be 457 for general category students, it would be 428, 387 and 396 for OBC, SC and ST candidates respectively.

In percentile scores, general category students, who get 79.63 percentile, will qualify for admissions. Percentiles required for other categories are 79.607 for SCs, 79.55 for STs, 79.69 for OBC and 79.68 for differently-abled category. A total of 1.5 lakh candidates had written the JEE-Advanced examination on June 2.

Sources from the secondary education department said that officials calculated the top 20 percentile as several requests were coming from parents and students asking for the same. "The document is, however, not final as the actual calculations are to be done by IIT-Kanpur which is in charge of conducting the examination. IIT-Kanpur will announce the results," an official said.

The rule under which intermediate marks are taken into account while fixing the eligibility criteria for students was introduced this year. Till last year, only performance of candidates in the competitive examination (JEE) was considered.

Placement Is Becoming A Tougher Challenge Than JEE For IITians

Though in IIT campus placement highest pay package has gone around 80 lakhs in computer science department, but situation is not same for other students. Average annual pay package for graduates this placement season has not exceeded Rs 10 lakh; this is even lower for students taking up core engineering jobs. Placement is not balanced, someone is getting a pay package of 80 Lakhs per annum and others less than 10 LPA. Big pay package to few students put an unnecessary stress on other students. The pressure to get a high-paying job is intense. All parents expect 60-80 lakhs pay package for their child but it is not possible.

Generally students think that to clear JEE is biggest challenge of his life but that’s not true.To get a high package job is becoming a tougher challenge than JEE. “It is perceived that every IITian gets multiple offers and is spoilt for choice. Four years ago when I qualified in the JEE, my relatives and family members told me that I would soon be earning in dollars,” said a final year IIT-B student from the civil engineering department who has not yet been placed. Along with that is the cold fact that not many students from this department get international offers. “The pressure to live up to their expectations is constantly weighing on me,” he added.

For students coming from smaller towns situation is much worse, their parents want their child to be placed in international firm. A former dean said he had a lot of trouble convincing a parent who was asking his daughter to not take up a job and wait for something better. The student hails from a small town in Andhra Pradesh and was getting an offer in a leading software company in Bangalore. But her parents wondered how she was offered so little. “They asked their daughter why she was being offered so little when other students from the institute were getting offers of Rs 80 lakh,” he said.

Reportedly this year only one students got pay package of 80 LPA. The average is not more than Rs 11 lakh for students from the computer science department and even less for the ones from the core engineering departments.
