Huge Discrimination against students writing JEE Mains 2013

It is a well known fact that merit lists for NITs/IIITs/CFTIs as well many Deemed Universities as well as SECs (State Engineering Colleges) will be prepared by the CBSE based on the following parameters
For NITs/IIITs/CFTIs and other Deemed Universities who have accepted the below
• 40% weightage to the NORMALISED Board Marks based on consideration of five subjects (which five subjects are to be considered have been clearly specified by the CBSE vide their letter to CoBSE)
• 60% weightage to JEE Mains marks

For State Engineering Colleges in states which have opted to scrap their state entrance tests and opted to go for JEE Mains
• 50% or any other weightage as decided by the State, to the NORMALISED Board Marks based on consideration of five subjects (which five subjects are to be considered have been clearly specified by the CBSE vide their letter to CoBSE)
• 50% or any other weightage as decided by the State , to JEE Mains marks
In all previous years from 2012 & before a student preparing for admission to any of the NITs/IIITs/CFTIs or other Deemed Universities who admitted students based on AIEEE ranks knew that
• They have to prepare for Board exams to secure a clearly specified number in terms of percentage as specified by the NITs/IIITs/CFTIs or other Deemed Universities so as to qualify for admission
• They have to prepare for the AIEEE exam knowing very well that they need to score in a range of given marks so as to target their desired College and/or Branch.
In case a student who wishes to write JEE Mains in 2013 and wants to make a strategy to suitably prepare for the Boards & JEE Mains he/she can’t do so because CBSE has denied to share the following information before the conduct of JEE Mains 2013
• What is the formula CBSE is going to use to normalize the Board marks which would be used post application of various weightages, as per requirements stipulated by the CBSE for preparing merit lists for admissions to NITs/IIITs/CFTIs in the academic year 2013-14 & beyond as well as used post application of various weightages as per requirements stipulated by various States who have adopted JEE Mains for preparing merit lists for admissions to their State Engineering Colleges in the academic year 2013-14 & beyond?
Please state the above formula giving the complete explanation of any short-forms/abbreviations and/or variables used in the formula along with suitable examples.
• What is the formula CBSE is going to use to calculate the 40%/50% weightage on the normalized Board marks and 60%/50% weightage to JEE Main marks to prepare the merit list for admission to NITs/IIITs/CFTIs in the academic year 2013-14 & beyond & for preparing merit lists for states who have opted for JEE Mains for admission to their state engineering colleges in the academic year 2013-14 & beyond?
Please state the above formula giving the complete explanation of any short-forms/abbreviations and/or variables used in the formula along with suitable examples.
Strangely the CBSE has said the following

“This information shall be given to you at the time of announcement of ranks achieved by you on the base of marks obtained in JEE-Main 2013 as well as QE.”
This is probably not correct on the part of CBSE as this information would not be of much use once the ranks are declared.

14 Lakh candidates registered for JEE 2013

Reportedly 14 Lakh have registered for JEE Main exam this year. This is highest number of candidates for any exam conducted by CBSE . This year CBSE is going to conduct JEE Main 2013, common entrance test for candidates aspiring for admissions to BE, BTech and architecture courses at National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), Delhi Technological University, and other centrally funded technical institutes (CFTIs).

Last year around 11.2 lakh candidates registered for the AIEEE. Till 2012 AIEEE and IIT JEE were two separate entrance test but from 2013 based on direction from the ministry of human resource development it was decided to replace both of them by JEE Main and JEE Advanced. According to the JEE Apex Board decision the merit list for admission to NITs, IIITs, DTU, Delhi and other CFTIs will be prepared by giving 40% weightage (suitably normalised) to class XII (or equivalent examination) or other qualifying examination marks and 60% to the performance in JEE (main) examination.

Why companies prefer B.Tech/B.E and Dual degree students over post-graduate students

In current situations to place students with masters degree is more difficult task for engineering institutes . The situation is same for premier Indian Institutes of Technology and Tier-II institutions. Though they are more qualified but not getting jobs, why?

These days companies want more experienced person. “Companies wonder what additional value they bring to the table other than a little more maturity. It is unfortunate but today, those with more experience matter; not those with qualifications,” says P Thiruvengadam, senior director, Deloitte India.
Another reason is that Indian companies don’t need too many people with masters degrees. Most of the companies don’t have their R&D department in India. Companies prefer ‘less qualified’ graduates who come cheaper and are “easier to mould.
“BTechs and BEs are preferred not just because they are engineers , but because they bring strong analytical skills to the table,” says Jhingan. Among the 300-odd engineers that KEC International , an RPG Group company, hires every year, there is one MTech/ME for every 10 BTechs.
Institutes, on their part, say companies prefer BTechs and dual-degree graduates (fiveyear graduate and post-graduate programme) for these reasons: Lower demand for research and development in core companies, perceived notions that engineering graduates will be cheaper than their over-qualified counterparts , and the younger lot is easier to mould.

HRD Minister Tharoor rejects new IIT proposal in Kerala state

Proposals for an IIT in the State, and the upgrade of Cochin University of Science and Technology into an Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) are unlikely to materialise, Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor has said.

The Minister told on Monday that as a central university and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research had been sanctioned to the State, approval is unlikely for an IIT too.

Maharashtra govt to set up new IIIT in state

Reportedly Maharashtra state government has decided to set up a new Indian Institute of Information Technology ( IIIT) in state
As per the decision, 50 per cent of the cost is to be borne by the Centre, 35 per cent by the state government and remaining 15 per cent by private players.
The land is to be identified and provided by state government and identify the partner, said Nagpur Lok Sabha MP Vilas Muttemwar. About 59.26 acres of land has been identified in Pune for the purpose, he added.
IIITs are a group of four institutes of higher education in India- at Allahabad, Gwalior, Jabalpur and Kancheepuram-focused on information technology.
They are established by the central government, centrally funded, and managed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

IIT coachings denies admission to blind student, he secures admission in MIT.Lifetime ambition to become president of India.

All IIT coachings rejected admission of Srikanth Bolla, on account of his visual disability. He was failed to get admission into IITs but he didn’t stop there. He tried for Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and he got through.

“I thought that if I could not get a seat at a renowned Indian institution, I must at least get into a world renowned institution. And I did,” said Bolla.
In 2009, when he had completed his pre-university from a college in Hyderabad, he wanted to get into IIT, but no coaching institute gave him admission. Undeterred, he applied to the MIT. “Around 120 seats are open to international students, and I was the only blind person,” he says. Presently, he is studying the final semester of his under-graduate degree in Computer Science and Business Management.
Born blind into an agricultural family in Sitaramapuram village in Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, he was admitted to a blind school in Hyderabad. He excelled in studies and scored above 90 percent in his class 10 examinations. He wanted to be an engineer and applied for the physics, mathematics and chemistry group for pre-university. But the education department said that a visually challenged person could only take up humanities. He had to run from pillar to post to get a favourable judgement. With the support of T Swarnalatha, his teacher from class 4, who translated all the books for him in audio format and braille he managed to score 93 percent. But the hurdle came when he wanted to join IIT after his pre-university. No entrance coaching institute gave him admission.
As a student in India, Srikanth became involved with Lead India 2020, a national youth moverment, and received a citation for leadership from the former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
At MIT, Srikanth is planning to major in Brain and Cognitive Science and Management; he is also seriously considering Computer Science. After graduation, Srikanth would like to set up a software firm in India to provide employment for rural youth. His lifetime ambition is to become the President of India.

CBSE to implement Pre-Announced Test (PAT) in Std X, XII

The CBSE has decided to introduce the ‘open book exam’ concept for its board exams (Std X, XII) from academic session 2013-14. It won’t literally be an open book exam. It will be called the ‘Pre-Announced Test’ (PAT) and will be applicable for all Std X subjects and some major ones of Std XII.

Four months before the exam, students will be made aware of the test they will appear for. They will test students’ analytical power. A formal announcement will be made in December.

PAT functions like the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) system that some education boards, including Maharashtra, are implementing. In the SSC exam, an out-of-syllabus passage is given to students and they are asked questions that cannot be answered word-for-word just by looking at the matter. For example, if the passage has a line saying, ‘Rajesh goes to school everyday and learns about animals, new countries and math formulae’, the question would be ‘Why does Rajesh go to school?’ The expected answer would be “Rajesh goes to school to increase his knowledge about the world around him.”

Under PAT, the same passage would be taught to students four months before the exam. The student will be expected to analyze various relevant questions that could be asked. On the day of the CBSE exam, PAT will not produce the passage, but there will be questions based on it. via toi

CBSE implementing Problem Solving Assessment in Classes IX, XI

It is a widely acknowledged fact that research and analytical skills, ability to apply basic concepts of different subjects, solve application based problems in Mathematics and Science, comprehend and analyse written text and effective communication are the skills which ensure success in Higher Studies and Professional areas. These dimensions of 21st Century life skills will greatly assist learners in acquiring higher order thinking skills such as Problem Solving and Decision Making.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning to initiate “Problem Solving Assessment” (CBSE- PSA) for students of Classes IX and XI from the second term of session 2012-13.

The PSA is not a new test but it will replace the already existing pen-paper test in the FA. The only difference will be that PSA will be conducted by the Board in the respective schools and the evaluation will be done by the Board. The exam will be conducted on the same day and the question paper will be provided by the Board. This 90-minute test will have nothing from the textbooks. It will comprise of questions from mathematics and an English passage from old essays or contemporary fiction.

Registration for this Assessment will be done separately by the Board and detailed circular will be issued before the start of the second term i.e. September 2012.

CBSE looking to collaborate with schools for organizing events

Requisition of School Auditorium / Venue for hosting CBSE Workshops / Seminars / Conferences.

The Central Board of Secondary Education has consistently been striving to establish new benchmarks in secondary education through its policies and programmes. In one of its move to strengthen the implementation of CCE scheme of evaluation in all of its affiliated schools and bring about other reforms in the education system of the country, CBSE has a separate training division that would take care of all training and development needs of teachers and school leaders.

In an endeavor to make this initiative a success, CBSE is planning to initiate training workshops for teachers and school leaders focusing on new initiatives and implementation of various innovative practices in all aspects of school education including the use of ICT, Assessment and Evaluation. In this regard, CBSE would like to collaborate with Independent Private Schools including Sahodaya School complexes which have an auditorium with a capacity to accommodate approximately 80-100 participants. CBSE would like to use this facility to conduct/organize trainings and workshops on various new initiatives. The effort is to involve as many institutes as possible in every Region of the Board.

ISM Dhanbad could be converted as an IIT

Dhanbad-based Indian School of Mines (ISM) could be converted into an IIT while ensuring that its core competency is not diluted, the Planning Commission has recommended to the government.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Friday, Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor said, “The Planning Commission has recommended that ISM Dhanbad may be converted into an IIT while ensuring that its core competency in mining and geology would be central to the institution and would not be diluted.”

ISM Dhanbad with the approval of its Finance Committee, Executive Board and General Council has forwarded the proposal for its conversion into an IIT, he said.

The approval on ‘Conversion of ISM Dhanbad into an IIT’ is an agenda item for the meeting of the council of the IITs to be held on January 7, Tharoor said.

In reply to a question on Gross Enrolment Ratio in the country, Union Minister for HRD M M Pallam Raju said, the GER has gone up to 18.8 per cent in 2010-11.

“The GER of students in higher education as a percentage of population in the age group of 18-23 years has increased from 13.7 per cent in 2008-09 to 18.8 per cent (provisional) in 2010-11, as compared to estimated world average of 29 per cent during the year 2009-10 as per the Global Education Digest 2012 published by UNESCO,” Raju said.

He also said that the National Knowledge Commission had recommended a series of initiatives for expansion, governance, curriculum research, faculty development, finance, asset management and affirmative actions.
On whether government is aware that controversies are arising regarding syllabus of CBSE, Tharoor said “No Such controversies have come to the notice of the CBSE.”

    Part IV Mathematics
    45
    Total:
    150

There is no time limit for individual parts of the test. The candidate can go back and change any of his/her answers among the 150 questions.

If a candidate answers all the 150 questions (without skipping any question), the candidate will have an option of attempting 12 (twelve) extra questions, if there is still time left. These extra questions will be from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics only; four questions from each part. Further, once the candidate has opted for extra questions, he cannot go back for correction of any of the earlier answered 150 questions.

The questions are so designed that a good student will be able to answer 150 questions in 180 minutes. The extra questions (a maximum of 12) will give a chance to highly meritorious candidates to score higher. However, candidates should keep in mind the fact that there is negative marking for wrong answers and any attempt to answer the questions by pure guessing of the answers is not likely to have any advantage, but may result in a reduction in the total score.

The questions will be selected at random from a large question bank. Different candidates will get different question sets. An expert committee will ensure that the question sets are of comparable difficulty level, content, question type etc. In this matter, the decision of the expert committee will be final and binding on the candidate.

All the questions and instructions of the test will be in English only. Candidates should bring a pen for the purpose of rough work, signing etc. Blank sheets for rough work will be provided, if required. Calculators and logarithmic tables are not allowed in the test centers. Candidates are not allowed to bring any other personal belongings such as mobiles.

Each candidate who registers for BITSAT-2013 will be instructed to download a ‘Hall Ticket’. Candidates with the hall ticket only will be allowed inside the Test centers. All centers are closely monitored for security and candidates’ identity and activities will be recorded using web cameras and/or closed circuit TV cameras. Candidate’s finger print and photograph will be taken at the time of the test and will be matched at the time of admission. Anyone violating the rules of the test center will not be allowed to continue with the test and will automatically be disqualified.
