UPTU Engineering Entrance Exam to be held on 20, 21 April

Uttar Pradesh Technical University will release the schedule for the State Entrance Examination (SEE) exam 2013 in engineering and management colleges today. This and many more decisions pertaining to the admissions in technical institutions will be taken in a meeting of the Central Admission Board (CAB) to be held at Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) on Tuesday. The meeting will be chaired by UPTU vice-chancellor Prof RKKhandal.

Though the university has already decided the dates for SEE 2013 as 20 and 21 April, decisions on the mode of examination whether online or offline will be taken on Tuesday. Currently, the state government merged the two state technical universities, the Noida-based Mahamaya Technical University (MTU) and Gautam Buddh Technical University (GBTU). After this merger, MTU university officials are trying to attract more students by bringing the brand value of SEE-UPTU back.

The meeting will see suggestions from many engineering and management institutions. Also, there is a proposal by private colleges to allow them to sell SEE brochures and application forms. Till last year, the forms and brochures were available only at post offices.

In the meeting, it will also decide whether the SEE for admissions to engineering colleges will be online or offline. Previous year, the university conducted SEE for MBA and MCA online. Even their application process was completely online. However, for engineering, the application process was both online and offline and the entrance test was in the written mode. This year, officials are hopeful that there will be online test for engineering students too. In this regard, JSS Academy of Technical Education, Noida has also send proposal to the university to begin dual degree course in Applied Management. This will also be placed in the meeting.

GCET Admission norms to be out in February First Week

The prospectus of the Goa Common Entrance Test (GCET) 2013 will be out for engineering and pharmacy aspirants in the first week of February month. This year, the prospectus will be different from last year because students seeking to join medicine and dentistry courses will not be taking the GCET but the national entrance and eligibility test (NEET).

DTE will also come out with the new guidelines for direct admissions to the second year engineering and pharmacy seats, which used to take place based on G2CET scores. The G2CET - which was held for diploma holders and science graduates for direct admissions to second year of engineering and pharmacy courses - is no more compulsory for states to hold as per directives of the all India council for technical education (AICTE).

The National Entrance cum Eligibility Test (NEET) for UG students will be conducted at a centre in Panaji on May 5.

Admissions to engineering and pharmacy bachelor's courses will take place based on the GCET conducted by the state directorate of technical education at 10 centres across the state. The GCET exam is set to be held after the NEET on May 8.

Direct admissions to second year engineering and pharmacy seats will now be decided on the basis of marks scored in the final year of the diploma or BSc course by the students.

However, the board of technical education has decided to consider giving a second opportunity to diploma course students who passed out in 2012 to re-answer the final year diploma exam to better their score.

IIT Undergraduate students might soon get PhD degree from US universities

Reportedly Indian institute of technology, Madras is in talk with 20 American universities to set to a joint PhD programme. No doubt that IIT gets best UG students across the country, but there phD programmes are not going too good. Most IIT undergraduates left for high-paying jobs or management education after their degree and the remaining went for PhD in overseas universities, they are not interested in IITs.

This is one of the biggest challenge for all IITs, since long time all the IITs were working to change this. Finally IIT Madras has found one uniques solution for this.
Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) director Bhaskar Ramamurthy and external relations dean R Nagarajan went to 20 American universities.
Ramamurthy wanted to sow the ground first with US universities before offering joint PhD programmes. Their tour went exceptionally well. US universities were too keen to collaborate with IIT Madras.
Michigan State University was eager to get to a joint PhD programme quickly, as soon as later this year. Two others, Purdue University and the University of Maryland, also wanted to move on to deeper relationships culminating in a joint PhD programme.

IIT Bombay to launch New Program to connect alumni for enterprise

Over the years, IIT Bombay has churned out some of the best engineers.

Now, the former students will get a helping hand as the institute launches an ‘alumni-alumni mentorship programme’ on the lines of ‘alumni-student mentorship programme’, in which expertise of former students is used to help and guide the current lot.

“Many of our alumni need mentors and the number of requests from former students to start an initiative where they can use the experience, knowledge and assistance of other alumni has gone up in the last one-and-a-half years. Hence, we decided to launch this initiative. We will launch the ‘alumni-alumni mentorship programme’ in the next two months,” said Bakul Desai, chairman of IIT Bombay Alumni Association (IITBAA) board of directors.

From career guidance to home loans — the project will cover a range of issues.

Desai said, “All requests for help or interaction will be routed through IITBAA. A formal structure is being created to facilitate this.”

A panel of mentors will be created. Once a request comes in, what the mentee wants and what the mentor can offer will be reviewed.

The parameters will be matched and once both parties agree, the process of interaction will start.

For the ‘alumni-student mentorship programme’, alumni and students have to register on a website maintained by Student Alumni Relations Cell. Each student is allotted a mentor, depending on preferences.

1700 study at 7 government engineering colleges

Even as Bihar now boasts of an IIT, NIT and BIT-Mesra's branch, the state also has seven government engineering colleges where at least 1700 students pursue engineering courses. Besides, there are nine private engineering colleges affiliated to Aryabhatt Knowledge University.

The government colleges are located at Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Gaya, Darbhanga, Motihari, Nalanda and Saran whereas private colleges are at Lakhisarai, Kishanganj, Biharsharif, Bihta, Vaishali, Aurangabad, Purnia, Buxar and Gaya. All these institutes are recognized by All India Council for Technical Education.

Science and technology department director Dhrub Prasad said admissions to the seven government engineering colleges are made through Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board. Students clearing the entrance test are also sent to private engineering colleges of Bihar.

According to Prasad, civil and mechanical streams are quite popular among students as job opportunities in computer science and information technology are shrinking. "While almost 80% students of Muzaffarpur and Bhagalpur colleges get placed with different companies (as the colleges are older), the placement from relatively newer colleges averages 40%," he said.

Expansion of colleges is not on the immediate agenda, but the government is keen on streamlining the existing colleges. "After the colleges came under AKU, we have implemented a common syllabus and semester system. A sum of Rs 2 crore each has already been disbursed to the colleges at Bhagalpur and Muzaffarpur. An equal amount has also been approved for the institutes at Motihari, Gaya and Darbhanga and as soon as we get funds from the central government, we would disburse the same to these colleges," said Prasad.

As for staff shortage in the government colleges, the directorate is awaiting nod from the general administration department to process the recruitment of teachers on contract for which a merit list of aspirants has already been prepared.

Shubhan Kumar, a IInd semester student of NITP, said the engineering colleges in the state were bettering, but they still had to go a long way insofar as training and placement are concerned.

But those who have migrated to other states for engineering studies disagreed with Shubhan. "Barring a few engineering colleges in Patna, the colleges in the state cannot compete with those in other states. With MNCs not around, placement is also difficult," said Patna's Aditya Kamal who studies at Jaipur Engineering College. Araria's Alok Ranjan, who also studies outside the state, echoed similar views.

Plea to change engineering admission pattern

Justice L Narsimha Reddy of the AP High Court issued notices to the government and authorities concerned seeking review of the admission pattern in engineering colleges in the state.

In a writ petition filed by students and the Telangana Professional Colleges Managements' Association, it is contended that there is a huge change in the circumstances from when the need for entrance examinations were felt to a scenario where as many as 2.4 lakh engineering seats are on offer in the convener's quota for 2.07 lakh students qualified in the Eamcet in 2012.

"Even after all the qualified students secure admissions, about 33,000 seats will be left vacant in the convener's quota this year. There are another 1,34,446 seats available in the management quota (30% seats), of which over one lakh seats may not find any takers. An estimated 1.5 lakh seats remained vacant after the conclusion of the counselling for the academic year 2012-2013", the petitioners contended. It is said that in the changed scenario continuing with the same selection process is untenable.

Similar 12th board question papers for different board students

Now board marks will play a major role to secure your seat in premier engineering institutes across the country. To get a seat in IITs student must be under top 20 percentile in their respective board. Till now standard of all boards were not same, so eligibility criteria didn’t seem to be meaningful, but now there is good news for students appearing for the class 12 exams. The educational boards have agreed to have a common design of question paper to make the school-leaving exams uniform.

20 educational boards, including the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) have adopted the core curriculum in maths and science..
This year admission to all centrally funded engineering colleges will be based on JEE Main and 12th board score, 60% weightage will be given to JEE Main score and 40% to XII board score.
Admission to all IITs will be based on JEE Advanced score but student must be in top 20 percentile to be eligible for IIT admission.

Ricoh to endow research center at IIT Gandhinagar

Ricoh Company Ltd has announced its financial endowment and industry partnership for the creation of the Design and Innovation Centre (DIC) at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN). The partnership is planned for three years starting April 1, 2013.

As part of the agreement, Ricoh will take part in joint research projects at the Center. This cooperative effort will further the company's aims of promoting open innovation, accelerating research and development using global resources, and studying market needs in India and similar markets. The technologies and services deployed in the Indian market can form the groundwork for solutions in other large emerging regions, including Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, which together constitute a market of over 2.5 billion people.

IITGN was set up in 2008. Located in the capital of the state of Gujarat in western India, IITGN is ideally situated at the intersection of leading-edge IT infrastructure, traditional culture, scholarship and industry.

In February 2012, Ricoh established Ricoh Innovations Private Ltd (RIPL) in Bangalore. A subsidiary of Ricoh Innovations Inc (RII) in Menlo Park, California, RIPL was created to combine market-oriented technology development with regionally optimized research to pioneer new business tailored for the Indian market and similar emerging countries. Ricoh's collaboration with IITGN began with RII's study of the application and validation of advanced IT technologies in educational fields.

HC rejects PIL demanding deferment of JEE

The engineering degree aspirants will have to take the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) this time as Gujarat high court on Tuesday rejected a public interest litigation (PIL) which had sought deferment of its introduction from this year.

The PIL had sought directions to the state government that it should defer its decision of offering the mandatory JEE to 2014, and it should not start from this academic year.

The government had earlier declared that all those who clear the board examination in science stream and aspire to take admission in engineering courses must take JEE, which is a common entrance test for majority of engineering institutes of prime importance.

An association - Vidhyarthi Hit Rakshak Samiti - had moved the court saying that the government decision could harm the future of nearly 1.7 lakh students, who may pass the board examination in 2013.

The petitioner also claimed that the students may not find enough time to prepare for JEE, for the study material is not available in Gujarati yet. Besides, there is a difference in the syllabuses offered for JEE and for Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GUJCET), which is mandatory for the students to take after clearing the board exams, the petitioner submitted.

In a rebuttal, the government said that there is not much difference in the syllabuses and the decision to introduce JEE has been taken with a view to uplifting the standard of education to what is required for the premier technical institutes.

The petitioner's lawyer submitted during the hearing that the state government has taken dual stand over the issue of entrance examinations, as in a similar litigation pending before the Supreme Court (SC) questioning mandatory National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) for admission in UG medical courses, the government opposes introduction of the test at this juncture.

After conclusion of hearing, the division bench of Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice J B Pardiwala upheld the state government's contention. It observed that the students should not be having problems because the syllabus for both the tests is the same.

The judges also criticized the request for deferment saying that advertisements in this regard were published in August last year. Besides, when there is no level field, how the ratio of 80:20 for intake of admission of students from Gujarat and outside can be maintained. The court further observed that if students' demands are accepted, there would be chaos at the time of admission. The HC also maintained that court should not interfere in educational policy.

IIT-B Techfest: City team wins RoboWars in record time

“Blood, sweat, destruction and glory,” this is how IIT Bombay’s Techfest web page describe its RoboWars event. This year the glory at RoboWars event belonged to three final year mechanical engineering students from Pune who won the competition in a record time of ‘within 3 seconds’.

Techfest held between January 3 and 5 is an annual technical festival held at IIT Mumbai every year where students from all over the world participate in various events. As many as 500 teams had registered online for the event out of which 59 teams were selected for the competition. There were six rounds in the competition, each a knock out round of 3 minutes, where two robots fought it out in the arena.

Rust In Peace (RIP), a 60 kg robot designed by Pushkin Sonuskar, Rohit Patel and Habeel Bakshi, final year mechanical engineering students of Padmabhooshan Vasantdada Patil Institute of Technology won the event.

“In the finals we were fighting a team from Sabu Siddiqui college in Mumbai. The moment the fight started, our RIP hit Dr Golu (Sabu Siddiqui’s robot) and flipped it out. Dr Golu couldn’t get back on its wheels and we won within three seconds from the start of the bout. This is a record winning time in the history of IIT tech fest,” said Rohit Patel.

Rohit and team won Rs 30,000 at the event.

The participants had to ‘design and construct a remote controlled robot capable of fighting a one on one tournament’. The maximum permissible weight of the robot is 60kg and it is required to destroy its opponent without damaging itself to win the match.

This is not the first time the team has won a major event. They also won the RoboWars at VJTI, Mumbai, held early this month.

“The preparation for the event started in July itself. Rs 50,000 was given by the college management thanks to professor SM Patil and rest we took out from our pocket. The weapon on our robot was a 14 kg drum that completes 5,000 revolutions per minute. The energy stored in it is 5,000 joules which is equivalent to two AK-47 bullets hitting you,” Patel said. “With the prize money, we want to make it more sophisticated and wireless so that we can participate in Robo games in California,” he added.

“We are very proud of our students. They will be felicitated by the college. Plus after seeing their enthusiasm, many students have shown interest and we are in talks with various companies to make a Robo center in the campus so that creativity of the students is utilised in a good way,” said SD Shirbahadurkar, Principal, PVPIT.

Bihar Police have roped in IIT students to provide free coaching to students in Maoist-affected villages to wean them away from rebels, a police official said Monday.

"A group of IITians will coach students for free in Maoists affected villages to prepare them for engineering and medical examinations and to clear Class 10 and 12 examinations," Rohtas District Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj said.
Maharaj said some IITians have agreed to help police to teach students in Maoist-affected villages.

Maharaj told IANS that nearly 1,000 students in over two dozen villages under Nauhatta block in Rohtas had enrolled for free coaching by IITians.

About 150 km from Patna, Rohtas is considered a Moist stronghold.

He said police would provide all facilities to run the free coaching. "In the beginning, free coaching would be given near Nauhatta block."

Maharaj said the offer of free coaching has created a positive atmosphere in the villages. "The response is better than expected. Students and their parents from Maoist-affected villages have shown interest in the free coaching," Maharaj said.
Six IIT students from IIT-Roorkee, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Kharagpur and IIT-Kanpur, will tutor the students.

Last year, Maharaj used Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan's picture in a poster asking poor and backward youths from rural areas not to join the rebels and to enlist in the security forces. However, Bachchan objected to the use of his picture without his consent.

Many Public sector Units (PSUs) are now using GATE scores for recruitment

Reportedly 10 lakh candidates have registered themselves for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering this year, an almost 30% increase over last year.

Basically GATE scores are used to determine admission to masters and doctoral courses in engineering, technology, architecture and science in higher education institutions funded by the ministry of human resource development (MHRD) and other government agencies. But interest in higher education isn’t the only reason for this increase in number of registrations. Employment Opportunities are also playing major role here. Many PSUs are recruiting using GATE scores.
In 2012, 13 public sector units, including BHEL, HPCL, PowerGrid, IOCL and GAIL, issued notifications that recruitment would be based on GATE scores. In 2011, the GATE score was used only by IOCL for recruitment, while in 2012 five PSUs said to have used the scores.

For parents, more money goes out, anxieties flow in

An IIT-JEE study plan has been prominently visible in R. Chandrasekharan’s living room for almost seven years now. It has a wealth of details, including hours to be spent on ‘solved examples’ in the textbook, the number of mock tests one should take and calculations on the time required for every numerical.

“My elder son started preparing for JEE (Joint Entrance Exam ) very late. So he could not clear the test. I did not want to repeat the mistake with my second son,” says the banker, who has now enrolled his younger son, Abhinav, in a reputed JEE coaching class in the city.

Abhinav, a class X student, has been spending precisely 16 hours every weekend in the coaching centre. “He is rather weak now but I am sure he will pick up,” his father says.

Mr. Chandrasekharan has already spent Rs. 3 lakh on JEE tuitions, and he will have to dole out another Rs. 2 lakh in the next few years.

“I spent Rs. 8 lakh to enrol my elder son in a deemed university. I could not manage a loan then. Banks are very doubtful about deemed universities and they don’t loan money for coaching,” he adds.

Parents these days, set aside at least Rs. 6 lakh for their children’s engineering education, in case their child does not make it through merit into a good college via counselling. This is standard practice, and the constantly-increasing amounts of money to be spent for admission are frequently lamented.

What does not make it to this discussion however, is the expense incurred on coaching classes.

Coaching classes for JEE are widely popular, and practically every household ends up spending at least Rs. 75,000 a year if the child starts coaching from class VIII, which, teachers say is the right time.

The tragedy is, many children leave these classes midway in class XI, when they just aren’t able to take the stress anymore. By this point, more than Rs. 2 lakh goes down the drain, says Kanchana Jayaraman, another parent.

Besides the over Rs. 4 lakh that a family spends on JEE coaching, there are additional costs involved too. “Mock tests at other coaching centres, crash courses, downloading JEE apps — many such costs spring up. Last year, my son asked for separate subject tuitions in March, because he was not confident about doing well in his boards exams. We had to spend Rs. 25,000 on that too,” said R. Sudha, whose son now studies electrical engineering at IIT-Roorkee.

And sometimes, coaching even entails dislocation. K. Balajee, a class VII student from Erode, joined an integrated course at Maharshi Vidya Mandir last year. “My father still works in Erode, but my mother and I have taken a room here,” says the boy.

In Chennai, schools such as Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Devi Academy and Chettinad Vidyashram have integrated JEE training into their regular curriculum, by tying up with coaching institutes.

Well-known coaching institute FIITJEE runs a hostel in Egmore, and partners with a firm to provide accommodation to students. Around 50 students from different parts of Tamil Nadu, the northeast and even the Gulf stay in these hostels.

For R. Rajathi Balasubramanian whose family relocated to India only so that her daughter, now in class X, could undergo JEE coaching, the recent changes in the pattern of the test have been a source of worry. “The students follow an integrated programme which means that they don’t have to look for extra coaching outside of school,” she said.

New rules make it tough for admission for even toppers of Engineering Agricultural and Medical Co

A student who tops EAMCET (Engineering Agricultural and Medical Common Test) may still not be eligible for admission at the first phase if he fails to pass the intermediate annual exam at the first go, officials said in Hyderabad.

In fact, candidates who take supplementary examination to clear any backlogs will be eligible for seats in the second counselling rounds only, with the new rules in place.

This move comes after the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) fixed deadlines for giving out entrance exam results and admission.

According to the new rules laid down by AICTE, all entrance test results would have to be released by June 5 and the first round of counseling completed in the same month. It also says the 2013 academic year must begin on August 1.

Until now, government was announcing EAMCET ranks after considering advanced supplementary results, which is released in June end or July first week. Last year the supplementary exam results came out in although EAMCET was conducted in May.

The new AICTE norms are all based on a Supreme Court ruling and experts say similar guidelines were also in place regarding the medical admissions by the MCI, which specifies that medical admission is not exceeded beyond September 30 and admissions made after that are not approved.

NIT, Karnataka to get three centres of excellence under TEQIP phase II

National Institute of Technology - Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal will get three centres of excellence under Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) phase II. While NITK received Rs 20 crore under phase I of TEQIP, the Union government under a World Bank funded programme has sanctioned Rs 12.5 crore for setting up these centres of excellence and already released Rs 6 crore for the purpose.

Gopal Mugeraya, dean of students' welfare, NITK presiding over the inaugural function of three-day international conference ICRAMST - 13 said the centres of excellence will be set up in renewable energy and smart grid, advanced materials technology, and cloud computing. While funding in first phase was used for strengthening nfrastructure of existing departments, phase II will help select departments grow as centres of excellence, he said.

Allied departments will come together to help fuel expansion of these centres, he said, adding that existing and new equipments will be used in these centres. The union government is helping premier educational institutions such as NITs with funds for equipment. Hitherto, the use for such equipment was low or was being limitedly used; he said adding that industries have come forward to meet the recurring costs of such equipment procured.

These centres will also give a thrust to NITK's drive towards consultancy services, which is essential for revenue generation, he said. Observing that industry-institutions have tended to work in isolation thus far, he said this is not the case with NITK. "In the time the institution in its KREC avatar for nearly 40-years came up with 49 PhDs. But in the last decade that it was upgraded to a NIT, the institution has churned out 350-odd PhDs," he noted.

Girish Rao, regional manager, Shell India Markets Pvt Ltd said it is imperative that all stake holders meet the broader energy challenges. It has been an endeavour with Shell to produce more energy with less carbon dioxide; he said adding industry-academia can resolve these issues together. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, dean of research for material and manufacturing research alliance, Universiti Teknologi Mayaysia, Malaysia was the chief guest.
