"Meeting of 11th April fruitful", But no fruit..Next meeting for new pattern on 14th April

The HRD ministry on Wednesday held discussions with IIT directors, chairpersons, faculty members and academicians on a proposal to change the pattern of the IIT-JEE examination from next year, by including 40% weightage of board marks.

Most of the attendees said the meeting was
fruitful.

HRD minister Kapil Sibal held separate meetings with the directors and members of the All India IIT Faculty Federation. However, no final decision seems to have been taken on the inclusion of board marks.
One of persons present in the meeting said that since girls do well in board exams, the proposal to include the board marks could help improve the gender ratio in IITs too. At present, the percentage of girls in these institutes is just around 10%.
"The discussion was amicable and fruitful," said Prof Narsimhan, president of the All India IIT Faculty Federation.
Meanwhile the Leadership Summit of the IIT Delhi Alumni Association will conduct a separate session on April 15 to spell out their reservations against the proposal for including board marks. PANIIT, a federation of IIT alumni, will meet on April 14 to chart out a set of recommendations for the government.

JEE 2012,IITs announces cut off for the first time ,thanks to RTI

NEW DELHI: Overturning a five-decade-old tradition India's premier institutes, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have disclosed admission cut-offs for the first time in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) held on April 8.

Over 5.6 lakh students appeared for the IIT-JEE on Sunday.

The minimum qualifying mark for general category for IIT-JEE 2012 is 10%, while it is 9% for OBCs and 5% for SC, ST and physically-disabled (PD) candidates. General category students appearing for JEE need 14 out of 136 in chemistry, physics and mathematics. The aggregate cut-off for the general candidate is 35% or 143 out of 408 to qualify for an all India rank.

Similarly, the minimum marks for OBC candidates are 13 out of 136, while it is seven out of 136 for SC/ST and PD.

In addition to these minimum marks, a student will have to obtain aggregate cut-off to be eligible to be part of all India ranking. The aggregate cut-off for general category students is 35%, OBCs (31.5 %) and SC/ST/PD (17.5%).

The decision is a result of the Supreme Court's observations in a case filed by IIT-Kharagpur professor Rajeev Kumar. The court in its judgment last year had ruled that the selection process needed to be ``upgraded'' and ``fine-tuned'' year after year with periodic changes so that the selection process and examination remain relevant and meaningful.

The disclosure has ensured that candidates can evaluate their performance soon after appearing for the exam. The JEE is accepted as one of the toughest engineering examinations across the world but the process has come under fire recently.

RTIs filed by Kumar on IIT-JEE revealed how the country's top technology institute has changes its examination system. In 2006 to 2011, there were varying cut-off marks for different subjects unlike the uniform pattern adopted this year. It varied from 37 in math to 55 in chemistry. In 2011, math cut-off was 34, while it was 20 for chemistry.

200 teachers opposed new pattern: Central committee visited IIT Mumbai on 9th April,2012

MUMBAI: The human resource development (HRD) ministry's plan to have a single all-India engineering entrance test seems to have run into rough weather with the IIT faculty opposing its plan to give weightage to Class XII marks during the admission process.

A central committee that visited the IIT-Bombay campus on Monday found it difficult to counter various arguments posed by the faculty against considering Class XII marks. Faculty members said considering Class XII scores and drawing equivalence by a set formula was not fair as the 40 Indian boards were diverse and their curricula as well as assessment rules different.

Almost all of the 200 teachers present said a fair normalization of Class XII scores for students is not possible as all Indian students who went to high school are not on the same page. Some faculty suggested that Class XII scores can be used at the first level to shortlist students.

"Improve schooling and our high schools; rid exams of malpractices, have a uniform country-wide exam timetable and quality of teaching-learning, fill up vacant posts for teachers and then we will speak of placing importance on Class XII marks," said a faculty member.

The HRD ministry wants to implement a single entrance examination from 2013 for admission to all centrally-funded institutions such as IITs, National Institutes of Technology, IISER, IIIT, IISc (Bangalore), IIEST (Shibpur) and NERIST ( Itanagar). States' engineering colleges can also admit students based on the exam scores.

Stating that the time frame of 2013 was too early for a decision so big, faculty members vetoed the visiting panel's recommendations. Instead, they suggested a pan-India screening exam, followed by another advanced subjective test for admission to the IITs.

Of the four members, merely two-chairman of the board of governor of IIT-Madras M M Sharma and IIT-Kharagpur director Damodar Acharya-visited the campus.

The panel has already visited IIT-Delhi and IIT-Kanpur and was faced with tough questions; in Kanpur, faculty boycotted the meeting and walked out. At IIT-Bombay, faculty members told the panel that the IIT council was merely an advisory body and cannot interfere with the institutes' admissions. "Unless the senates of all the IITs pass this report, it cannot be implemented," said another faculty.

Faculty members said JEE has earned the trust of the country for its fairness and if it has to be improved, then something better must be thought of.
