Five reasons why CBSE students qualify IIT Exam
The recent revelation that more than half of the candidates who happen to join Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) were from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has left the educationists looking for reasons for the unprecedented success of the CBSE students in the fiercely competitive IIT examination.
According to available data, out of 9,700 students who qualified for the IIT this year, 5,500 were from the CBSE. It means the CBSE board students contributed to 56 per cent of the total students joining the IITs.
In the year 2011, the success rate of CBSE board student was 56 per cent and in 2010 it was 58 per cent. This is a remarkably high percentage as compared to other boards, which contribute marginally in sending their students to the IITs.
According to education experts, the reasons why more CBSE students get admitted to IITs are:
1. The CBSE has a numerical advantage as more students appear in the Class 12th board exam than any other board. In 2012-2013 over 6.99 lakhs students appeared for the class XII CBSE examination.
2. It enjoys a geographical advantage as the numbers of schools affiliated to CBSE board are more in metro and major cities of the country.
3. These cities have better IIT coaching facilities and many of these coaching centres start training students from an early age.
4. The course syllabus also contributes to the success of CBSE students in joining the IITs. The syllabus, although marginally similar to IIT examination, lays a sound foundation for facing the IIT entrance examination.
5. The other reason which contributes to high CBSE success rate is its course structure - It's based more on reasoning and analytical abilities than memorizing the facts.
Grand rally at Ranchi to mark Women’s Empowerment Day
The state government plans to invite over 50,000 women from different districts of the state to celebrate Women's Empowerment Day. Chief minister Hemant Soren has taken a decision in principle to observe Women Empowerment Day every year on October 15 but this time due to delay in preparations the event is being organized on October 20.
Having taken women-friendly decisions during the last cabinet meeting, Soren's idea is to communicate them to the women folk in person during the celebrations.
The government has announced 50% reservation for women in appointments at primary school level, home guards, secretary of panchayats and 33% reservation in appointments of police department.Besides, girl's education in state polytechnic colleges, engineering colleges, medical, paramedical, pharmacy and nursing colleges will be free.
In order to convey these decisions, department of social welfare, women and child development department has invited Sahias, Anganwadi sevikas, women teachers of all government schools and representatives of panchayati raj institutions to participate in the day long programme being organized at main athletic stadium of mega sports complex in Hotwar.
Heavy bandobast has been ensured by the district administration for the purpose. One of the first decisions was to order closure of all government and private schools in the capital apprehending traffic jam. Orders have been issued to stop entry of heavy vehicles in the capital, especially on the routes to Hotwar sports complex. District administration has deployed 46 magistrates along with adequate police party to manage the crowd. 18 magistrates have been kept in reserve and traffic SP has been directed to manage the city traffic besides ensuring entry of the vehicles ferrying the women from all 24 districts on time.
While the opposition blames JMM for misusing government fund for gaining political mileage, neutral analysts believe that the programme has been organised in haste to avoid Election commission's restrictions that would come into force any time soon. "Government fund should not have been wasted for a political programme like this," said Pradeep Sinha of the BJP
The deputy commissioner Palamu, K N Jha conceded that there would be 'some difficulties' for the Ranchi bound commuters but added in haste, "In a big event like this such things are to be taken in stride." He confirmed pressing of 76 buses for Ranchi that day. Jha said Palamu has been given a target of dispatching 3,000 women from here for Monday's celebrations. Similar directions have been given to every DC to ensure that the requisite number of participants from every district attend the programme.
After 2 lacklustre years, IT companies like TCS, Infosys, HCL Tech to hire in thousands from campuses
After a few tepid years at college campuses, information technology companies are back to hiring in big numbers as Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys and HCL Technologies ramp up recruitment. This is good news to the over 1.5 million engineers who graduate from the country's colleges every year and are struggling to land a job due to an oversupply of talent.
Tata Consultancy Services, India's largest IT services company , said it will hire 35,000 freshers for fiscal 2016, boosting its rate of campus recruitment. The company hired 25,000 from campuses in fiscal 2015. Robust growth prospects led to the company raising the figure, TCS' human resources head Ajoy Mukherjee told ET.
TCS will also make 800 offers in the United States as part of its plan to bring 500 freshers from the United States on its rolls in fiscal 2016. In the current financial year, the company is hiring 400 US freshers.
Engineering colleges have also noticed the uptick. Last month, VIT in Tamil Nadu saw Wipro, Infosys and Cognizant, among others, making more offers than the previous year. While Wipro made 1,141 job offers, Accenture made 1,324 offers. Similarly , Infosys made 1,452 offers and Cognizant 1,911. "I think we see more appetite to take on more freshers and entry level hires as well," said Prithvi Shergill, chief human resource officer at HCL Technologies. "I think there will always be fluctuations, but yes, we are seeing an upward trend in entry level hiring." He declined to give the company's fresher hiring numbers for the next financial year.
Bangalore-based Infosys has also said it would hire between 15,000-16,000 freshers for the current financial year, a sharp increase from the 6,000 freshers it hired in fiscal 2013. The company has not re vealed its campus hiring figure for the next financial year.
The increased hiring from campuses comes as the IT industry is preparing for higher growth. "It is a good sign because fresher hiring tends to be considered a lead ing indicator for how companies view fu ture demand. While the jobs are good for the freshers, I don't think their starting salaries will be rising," an analyst with a Mumbai based brokerage told ET. He declined to be identified because he is not authorised to talk to the media. IT companies count on freshers to keep costs low. Analyst firm HfS estimated that TCS effectively achieved a 6.3% reduction in average employee costs every year over 2007-2013. During this period, the percentage of new graduates hired of the total rose from 50% to 80%.
"Fresher hiring continues and has to con tinue mainly because it is one of the important levers to manage the cost and to ensure that they balance the pyramid," said Sunda raman Viswanathan, management consult ant at Zinnov Management Consultancy .
"The fresher hiring will be there for at least the next three-five years and the levels will be maintained." Part of the reason for this is that wage hikes in the industry have drop0 ped to single digits and starting salaries for a new graduates have been stagnant for over t four years as oversupply and softness in the IT industry pressured wages. TCS' Mukhert jee said the company had not changed fresh er salaries for the offers it had made for the s next financial year.
