IIT Delhi innovations – Process to recover nutrient from human urine and Antibacterial human clothes

Reportedly IIT Delni has invented a process to recover nutrient from human urine and antibacterial human clothes to keep body fresh. Project was showcased at the annual exhibition of the premier institution.

Process to recover nutrient from human urine

In this invention students have proposed a technology that can retrieve nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium from human urine.
“Human urine contains 70 percent nitrogen, 50 percent potassium and 50 percent phosphorus and if retrieved it has potential to replace any kind of chemical fertilizer and will be environment-friendly,” said Vijayaraghavan M. Chariar, associate professor at IIT-D

Antibacterial human clothes

A team of students have developed silver nanoparticles which when applied to fabric during its manufacturing makes it antimicrobial and keeps it fresh and cool in sweltering heat.The product is already being used by brands like Marks & Spencer, Louis Philippe, Raymonds and Amante.
Other innovations by IIT-Delhi
  • a biosensor chip to detect pesticides, heavy metals, aflatoxin and bacterial contamination in milk;
  • multi-functional wheelchairs
  • protecting household items from earthquakes.

1.73 lakh students appeared for UPTU SEE

Over 1.73 lakh candidates appeared for the state entrance exam (SEE) for admissions to various technical institutions in UP on Sunday. Conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU), the exam was held at held at 262 centres in 31 cities in four shifts. While 1.55 lakh candidates were registered for engineering courses, nearly 18,000 were for other undergraduate courses, including pharmacy, fashion designing, hotel management and others.

According to SEE officials, 3% absenteeism was reported in the exam. In Lucknow, around 15,000 candidates took the exam at 28 centres. In B Tech, 65% of the total seats will be filled through SEE while admissions on 20% seats will be done JEE (Mains). The remaining 15% seats are reserved for management quota.

Engineering aspirants walking out of various examination centres gave a positive feedback on the question paper. While chemistry and biology carried easy questions, for most (whom TOI spoke to), Physics proved a damper. The question paper was of 600 marks which carried 150 questions of four marks each. There is no negative marking for any wrong answer.

"Questions from Physics were tricky and time consuming. Questions on topics like optics, vector and magnetic were tough. Biology section was comparatively easy which raised hopes of good marks,'' said Jyoti Yadav. Another aspirant, Manish Singh said, "The paper was balanced. Some questions from Inorganic Chemistry were tough. But overall, the paper was satisfactory.''

Candidates said mock papers helped them put up a good show. "Easy paper has raised chances of a high merit list,'' said Nitin, an engineering aspirant.

As fixed up by the state government, a general category candidate needs to obtain 25% marks to qualify for the exam while a SC/ST candidate will have to secure 20% of the total marks.

The engineering exam was held from 7.30 am to 10.30 am, architecture was conducted from 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm. Hotel management and fashion designing exam was scheduled from 3 pm to 4.30 pm.
