Scientists to explain Mars mission at IIT-Gandhinagar event

AHMEDABAD: The low cost of Isro's Mars mission, which saw the organization send the Mangalyaan to the red planet on its maiden attempt has impressed the whole world. But what went behind the preparations for the historic mission?

At an interaction with students at a two-day Design and Innovation Expo called, Amalthea, to be held at IIT-Gandhinagar this weekend, Isro scientists will give an idea of the groundwork done for the Mars mission. They will also explain how low-lost sensors were manufactured in Ahmedabad and the challenges faced by scientists of Space Application Centre (SAC) in the city in executing the project. Sources at IIT-Gandhinagar said the scientists will also talk about the technological prowess that the nation had to develop to ensure that the Mars orbiter reached its destination successfully.

A model of Mangalyaan will also be displayed at 'Amalthea' which begins from October 11.

Young technocrats will also be given a glimpse into Isro's next project, Chandrayaan-II, which will carry a lunar rover to collect and analyze samples from moon's surface.

Amalthea will also host an exhibition in which around 100 companies, institutions and research labs from various industries are expected to take part. They will showcase technologies and R&D that had gone into their products, sources at IIT-Gandhinagar said.
