SSC CGL (Tier I) Exam: English Language: Question Paper Analysis

The Staff Selection Commission takes CGL examination every year to select candidates for various jobs under state government. Candidates from all over the nation take this examination yearly to get in to various job opportunities. The English language paper is a vital part of the overall examination and it contains 50 marks, just like the other papers in the examination. The total marks for the examination is set to 200 where in total 200 questions are asked to the candidates. The English language paper checks the overall English language capability of the candidates and tests their basic grammar skills. It is really important to score well in each of the four papers to move on to the next tiers of the examination. The initial stage, i.e. Tier I, consists of relatively easier questions from the rest of the tiers. There are multiple choice questions that are asked in the examination for which the candidates get a limited time to solve. The English paper consists of questions (Read More for question paper) dealing with basic grammar and comprehension skills. It tests the ability of the candidate’s sentence formation skills and provides an opportunity to score even better in the following tiers of the examination.
The understanding of the language is the most important thing and the question paper tries to completely analyze the English language involvement in part of the candidates. They are tested rigorously over their comprehension, grammar and Vocabulary skills and are marked according to their qualifications. There are questions from basic high school levels testing the general idea of the candidates regarding the paper.
The English language question paper contains questions related to fill in the blanks, idioms and phrases and provides jumbled sentences which need to get re-arranged by the candidates according to a proper grammatical logic. The section checks the candidate’s ability to form proper sentences and frame an idea of the language. The questions related to idioms and phrases checks the candidate’s grip over the language and give them an opportunity to score well.
Questions related to one word substitutions, synonyms, antonyms and others are there to test the vocabulary of the candidates. The questions are directed to test the word stock and vocabulary of the candidates. These candidates are checked and tested on such grounds so that they could get over to their faults in the initial tier and perform well in the next examinations to follow. It is very important to get the basics right for the candidates as they would have to face even severe challenges in the time to come for cracking the examination.
In order to check the overall comprehension and grammar capability the questions related to common errors, mis-spelt words,  passage, cloze tests and sentence improvement are asked. The questions generally deal with candidate’s ability to judge mistakes and perform accordingly. There are questions related to active and passive sentences and tense to check the grammar skills of the candidates. Along with these questions there generally remains a reading comprehension section where questions are asked based on a paragraph given in the question paper.
