No doubt, the IITs hiking fees is long due in view of the escalation in cost of education.
But to make it free for all SC/ST students needs rethinking. Even affluent people, such as highly paid civil servants/public sector executives, businessmen and politicians educate their children by availing educational loans.
Free education should be income-based only and not caste-based. Reservation in admission is adequate to set right social imbalances.
The Human Resources ministry needs to review the issue.
