Tamil Nadu state board students will have an uphill task giving the IIT entrance test this year as the revised format will largely be based on the CBSE syllabus, minimizing their chances. Moreover, only the top 20 percentile of students who qualify in the JEE main (the erstwhile AIEEE) will be allowed to take the JEE advanced test to get admission into IITs.
Eminent academician and career counsellor Mr Jayaprakash A. Gandhi said that the revised JEE pattern would prove detrimental to students as they would not be able to write the JEE advanced test if they failed to qualify in the JEE main. “As All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) had always been based on the CBSE syllabus, very few students from the Tamil Nadu state board could clear the test,” he added.
Pointing out that even though hardly any students from the state board made it to the prestigious IITs, Mr Gandhi said that they could at least try their luck in the entrance test till now, but with the new pattern it will not be possible.
Dr R. Kishore Kumar, head of St. John’s International Residential School in the city, said that as very few students from the Tamil Nadu state board entered IITs, the new pattern would not make a difference.
R. Saravanan, an IIT aspirant from a Tamil Nadu state board school, said that IITs should provide a fair-playing field for all students and should not deprive them an opportunity to take the JEE advanced test.
