IIT Madras students getting ready for ‘Lunar Rover Challenge’

‘Lunar Rover Challenge’ will be a technical event that will be held at Shaastra-annual technological festival of IIT Madras, in month of january. Top 5 teams will get a prize of 1 lakh and the winning team will get Google Lunar X Prize in April.
Lunar Rover Challenge
The teams were asked to come up with a concept for a lunar rover which can descend from the 45 ramp of a lunar shuttle and negotiate the rough and bumpy terrain of the moon. The robot should be designed in a way that it can manoeuvre the craters on the moon. With the safety light switched on, it has to cover a distance of 500 metres and send back real time updates like pictures and videos to the control room on earth.
Preliminary Round
In preliminary round of ‘Lunar Rover challenge’ that was held on Sunday, 38 teams presented their robotic prototypes. One of the most interesting concepts was that of the robot with caterpillar legs, said MS Sivakumar, professor of applied mechanics, IITM. “The concept was similar to the natural motion of an insect which lifts up its body on losing balance. The other innovative ideas were the four legged robot and the one with a C-shaped leg.”
“These robots can climb on any surface and move to any side,” said former marine engineer H P Biswas.
From Chennai, the preliminary round will go to Mumbai and Delhi and the selected teams will present their rovers at Shaastra to be held from January 4 to 7.

New discovery of IISc scientists acknowledged across the globe

Reportedly an IISc scientist Banibrata Mukhopadhyay and one of his student Indrani Banerjee has successfully applied Einstein’s gravitational theory to unlock the mystery of black holes in space. Both of them worked for more than two years to get desired results.
The new discovery by them on black holes has been acknowledged by the scientific community across the globe, including professors from Harvard University.
The new study by duo throws more light on black holes and their properties, particularly the correlation between mass and spin or rotation. They have proved that mass and spin are not independent of each other but actually interdependent. They have established that mass of the star could be used to calculate the spin.
“The spin of the observed black holes is still a debatable issue — the exact value of the spin is not known. On the other hand mass can be determined more easily. Rotation of the black hole is determined by the mass and rotation of the initial star. The larger the mass of the initial star the greater it tends to have a high rotational speed and turn into swiftly spinning black holes. The smaller the mass of the initial star the slower its rotation and spin. This property shows that spin and mass are correlated. Hence if mass is known, the spin can be predicted. Eventually, only one fundamental parameter characterizes the black hole,” Banibrata explained.
What is Black hole
A black hole is a region of spacetime from which gravity prevents anything, including light, from escaping.[1] The theory of general relativity predicts that a sufficiently compact mass will deform spacetime to form a black hole. Around a black hole, there is a mathematically defined surface called an event horizon that marks the point of no return. The hole is called “black” because it absorbs all the light that hits the horizon, reflecting nothing, just like a perfect black body in thermodynamics

For first time in 100 yrs, Dalit student tops King George Medical University

Vandana

SURBHI KHYATI : Lucknow, Sun Sep 29 2013, 05:20 hrs: Indian Express

For a medical university that has been in news time and again for alleged discrimination against Dalit students, King George Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, is all set to award its most prestigious awards to a student belonging to Schedule Caste — for the first time in over 100 years of its history.
Vandana, an MBBS student of SC category of 2008 batch, has topped the university and bagged a total of 17 medals, including the most prestigious Hewett Gold Medal and Chancellor's Gold Medal, apart from two other gold medals for academic excellence.
The medals would be bestowed upon Vandana in the ninth convocation ceremony of the university Sunday.
The Hewett Gold medal is awarded by the varsity for obtaining highest marks in Final Professional MBBS Part II examination whereas Chancellor's medal is given for obtaining highest aggregate marks in MBBS.
Confirming that Vandana is the first student from SC category to get the top two gold medals, KGMU Vice-Chancellor Prof DK Gupta said: "In the last 100 years, we saw no student from SC category get an award (in academics)...I am very happy that this student (Vandana) bagged both the gold medals this year."
Vandana maintained that her achievement is more of an individual success, which she owes to her family rather than a story of community struggle and victory.
"I do not really relate to 'Dalit struggle' because I have had the good fortune of getting excellent education and my parents and siblings have been very supportive," Vandana, youngest of the three children of Harish Chandra Ram, a PWD junior engineer, told The Sunday Express.
Even in the past, Vandana has proved herself as a meritorious student with an outstanding 91 per cent marks in 10th and 89.64 per cent in 12th.
After completing schooling from Lucknow Public School, Vandana got 37th rank in SC category in medical entrance examination which secured her a seat at KGMU.

Reality of JEE Advanced 2014, you must know !!

Every year lakhs of students appear for IIT entrance examination but only thousands of them get success after two years of continuous hard work. What happens to others, why the success rate to get entry into IITs are too low.
Look at below queries and answer them one by one. Queries are very simple and it will take less than 1 second for you, but please honest to yourself.
1. Do you think that Good coaching can replace your hard work
What’s your answer, Yes/No
Yes - Please don’t ever think like this, no coaching can replace your hard work. No one will be with you until the end of your exam. They can guide you in your journey for IIT JEE examination but please remember at the final day of your exam you have to fight with lakhs of other students and you be alone at that time. Only your hard work will help you at that moment, so don’t ever completely rely on these coaching.
No - It’s very good. Just do your hard work and you will get success.
“All the very best”
2. What you say, late night studies for few months before JEE will take care of everything
What’s your answer, Yes/No
Yes - How can you think like that, others are fool who is preparing for JEE since last two years. If you have wasted your time till now please don’t waste it more. Start JEE Preparation today only.
Let me tell you, most of us think like this, especially the ones who were unable to begin preparing for the entrance well before time.
Staying up at night may not be very helpful as it damages your sleep routine and health.
No - Very good, you understand competition level of JEE
3. What you say, is IIT everything for you!!
Yes – It’s good if you select for IITs but let me tell you there are many other good options also available for you. IITs are not the only institute which can make your future bright.
You can see that engineering students from other institutes are also doing very well
There are many other good engineering colleges in India where you can study the specialization of your choice, get good grades and be quickly placed in good companies.

Are there any famous and successful people who did not join IIT even after cracking JEE ?

4. IIT Entry is very difficult, not possible for students like me?
Yes – Why do you think, that you can’t clear JEE Advanced. If it’s because your concepts are not clear than yes you might be right. IIT entrance examination is all about your knowledge, if you are not good in concepts it’s not possible for you.
But if you think just because you are average student in your school/coaching, then let me tell most of the students who clear IIT entrance were average students. So don’t think like this and concentrate on your studies

IIT welcome the proposal to reverve one third seats for girls

According to sources, students’ affairs council (SAC) at IIT Madras has prepared a new proposal to reserves one third seats of IITs for girl students.
Sree Satwik Gokina, speaker, student affairs council at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras said as the institute had seen an increase in the number of girl students, it had become imperative to provide them reservation in SAC.
“We have had long discussions about the reservation issue in our meeting on September 21 in which there were differing opinions, some welcoming and others against it,” he said. He said that the SAC had formed a 15-member committee to interact with students and come out with a report on October 28after which the council would take its final call on the number of seats.
“We are also looking at amending hostel rules to allow girl students to campaign in boys’ hostels after the stipulated entry time. This will help girl students to continue their campaign for long hours in boys’ hostels as we have 17 boys’ hostels and only two for girls,” he added.
Prof L.S. Ganesh, dean (students) at IIT Madras, and an alumnus of the institute who had contributed to drafting a constitution for SAC in his student days, welcomed the proposal. “The number of girl students in the institute has seen a tremendous increase over the years. It has gone up from 100 a decade ago to over 1,000 today. It is important that we reserve some constituencies for girl students in the 50 member SAC,” he said.

IIT Madras graduate Prem Wasta richest savviest guy and Blackberry’s new owner

Prem Wasta 63 year old, graduate from IIT Madras who settled to canada in 1972 is in limelight again for his new deal with Canadian firm BlackBerry Limited for USD 4.7 billion. Wasta is already famous for for his unexpected, unorthodox buying moves and predictions and known as Warren Buffet of Canada.
prem wasta blackberry
Last night BlackBerry Limited said it reached a tentative agreement for a USD 4.7 billion buyout by a group led by Watsa-led Fairfax — its biggest shareholder. Fairfax (Investment firm co-founded by Prem Wasta) owns about 10 per cent of the handset manufacturers common shares.
Now all eyes are on Wasta, as to whether he will be able to conclude the deal successfully and turn around the troubled smartphone maker who has been hit hard by Apple and Samsung..
Brief about Prem Wasta:
Hyderabad-born Watsa, who earned a bachelor’s in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras in 1971, moved to Ontario in 1972 where he earned his MBA degree from the University of Western Ontario. He met his wife, Nalini Loganadhan, during the final year at IIT and married her a few years later. The couple today has three children – two daughters and a son.
He predicted the crash of 1987, the Japanese collapse of 1990 and also the 2008 meltdown in the US. He gained from the US slowdown by picking up shares at rock-bottom prices when others were counting massive losses.
Beginning his professional career at Confederation Life Insurance as vice-president of Confederation Life Investment Counsel in 1974, Watsa left the firm in 1984 to join as vice president of start-up firm GW Asset Management, where he served for a year.
He co-founded Hamblin Watsa Investment Counsel (which was acquired by Fairfax in 1991) in 1984. The following year, Watsa took control of Markel Financial Holdings, which was later re-named as Fairfax.
Watsa, who serves on Advisory Board of the Richard Ivey School of Business, is also the Chancellor of University of Waterloo, a Canadian city where BlackBerry Limited is headquartered.
“I know he is an ardent admirer of Warren Buffett and is sometimes referred to as the Warren Buffett of Canada,” says MG Venkatesh Mannar, the Ottawa-based President of The Micronutrient Initiative, and Watsa’s senior at IIT-Madras. “I remember him then as a shy and reserved person (maybe he still is).”

IIT Kanpur official explains the reasons behind poor ranking of IITs

This year if we look at current QS rankingofworld’s universities, no IITs are under top 200. According to IIT Kanpur’s dorector IITs are nowhere because they didn’t pay the huge price to be even considered for a global ranking.
“They (a ranking agency) charge 1.5 lakh US dollars per IIT and even the ministry is aware of this,” said Indraneil Manna, the director of IIT-Kanpur, “One agency proposed that we pay 4.5 lakh dollars to be evaluated. It was quite a large sum.”
The top IIT official, who is part of a five-member committee of directors set up to explore global ranking systems, said, “We don’t shy away from scrutiny. If the exercise is transparent and objective and most importantly their data interpretation is precise then it’s worth spending that much money.”
The IITs have always maintained that they don’t want to be part of the global rat race, but the slide in rankings seems to have rattled the premier institutes.
In the prestigious QS rankings of the world’s 500 best universities released on September 10, IIT Delhi ranked at 222, IIT Bombay at 233, IIT Kanpur at 295, IIT Madras at 313 and IIT Kharagpur at 346.
The world’s top three were MIT, Harvard and Britain’s Cambridge.
“It hurts our reputation, so now we have been forced to explore the ranking system,” Mr Manna said, “We never felt the need to chase a ranking system, but the President raised a concern that IITs are not making it to any global list, so we felt the need to address that concern.”

Jadavpur university students on indefinite hunger strike against suspension of two seniors

According to sources hundreds of students of Jadavpur University are on indefinite hunger strike demanding suspension of two seniors. Strike started on Friday evening. Students are saying that anti-ragging committee branded a minor interaction between seniors and juniors as ragging without proper investigation.
“It was not ragging…but the anti-ragging committee concluded so, without proper investigation. There was no transparency in the process,” said a fourth year student of the civil engineering.
The two students were suspended Sep 11 after a second year engineering student gave a complaint to the University Grants Commission (UGC) that he was beaten up last month. A final year student of construction engineering was suspended for two semesters, and a fourth year student of the printing technology department was handed a one-semester suspension.

Yet another case of drugs abuse has hit the Indian Institute of Management Indore. This time 3 students of the Integrated Programme in Management were caught smoking up on the campus. The incident happened a week ago and a disciplinary committee was set up to probe it.
Committee members apparently had long discussions with the students before arriving at a decision to expel all of them. According to Dr Akhtar Parvez, Dean, Administration the parents of the students were informed and they were given the choice of withdrawing from the five-year programme.
The boys are 17 years old and come from academically-eminent families. Two of the boys are from South India. The parents were apparently in a state of shock on hearing about the incident while the students generally seemed ‘unmoved.’ Parents of all the students had come to the campus to collect their wards.
Drugs abuse is not unheard of in b-schools in India. However, while many institutes prefer to let it be as a ‘natural thing’ on campus, IIM Indore has always been taking action to the point of expelling students. Adds Dr Parvez: “We have a zero-tolerant attitude when it comes to alcohol, smoking or drugs. We do not like to give students a second chance if the committee set up to study the case suggests that we expel the students. It is a message we want to send across.”
The students procured the drugs from dhabas sprung up close to the institute. According to sources, while these dhabas also sell parathas and sabjee, they eventually sell drugs to those who visit them often and have the cash to cough up.
Last year too, five students were caught taking drugs in two different cases at IIM Indore . In February 2012, two students were expelled for taking drugs and later in October, three students were expelled for the same reason. Some of the students were given a chance to get return after a year of which one student joined back IIM Indore.

CBSE may conduct JEE Main twice in a year from 2015

JEE Apex body meeting was held on Tuesday to discuss new CBSE proposal of conducting JEE Main twice in a year. If this proposal is accepted all students can appear two times for JEE Main without losing a year. JEE Apex body accept that this will reduce stress of students.
If this proposal is accepted, new system could be implemented from 2015. In these two exams, CBSE will consider best score of the candidates as final JEE Main score.
Final announcement has not been made yet. All experts are not in favour of this proposal. According to some IIT Professors repeat exam could increase stress as every candidate would try to improve his or her marks. “The second chance may prove good for students who have missed the first exam for a genuine reason. But it will encourage every student to take both the tests to improve their chances.”
