According to sources, students’ affairs council (SAC) at IIT Madras has prepared a new proposal to reserves one third seats of IITs for girl students.
Sree Satwik Gokina, speaker, student affairs council at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras said as the institute had seen an increase in the number of girl students, it had become imperative to provide them reservation in SAC.
“We have had long discussions about the reservation issue in our meeting on September 21 in which there were differing opinions, some welcoming and others against it,” he said. He said that the SAC had formed a 15-member committee to interact with students and come out with a report on October 28after which the council would take its final call on the number of seats.
“We are also looking at amending hostel rules to allow girl students to campaign in boys’ hostels after the stipulated entry time. This will help girl students to continue their campaign for long hours in boys’ hostels as we have 17 boys’ hostels and only two for girls,” he added.
Prof L.S. Ganesh, dean (students) at IIT Madras, and an alumnus of the institute who had contributed to drafting a constitution for SAC in his student days, welcomed the proposal. “The number of girl students in the institute has seen a tremendous increase over the years. It has gone up from 100 a decade ago to over 1,000 today. It is important that we reserve some constituencies for girl students in the 50 member SAC,” he said.
