The IITs were a vision of Jawaharlal Nehru, who envisaged that these institutes would provide scientists and technologists of the highest calibre to help building the nation towards self-reliance in her technological needs. The IIT-JEE examination being the gateway for these most prestigious institutes is expected to mine the best candidates for this mission from the academic pool in the country. But, is today's pre-engineering ecosystem favourable for this role?
Today, many students are opting for IIT-JEE coaching from Std VIII, either due to the 'Herd effect' or parental pressure and also due to fear of competition to prevent oneself from
losing the advantage to others. Another factor is the commercialization of education by many coaching classes, who for their self-interests have wrongly advocated the need of coaching early in school life.
In my opinion, high school level IIT-JEE coaching hardly teaches anything which the students can't do on their own or in schools. Students need some help in standard XI-XII to adapt to the new environment, which is radically different from pre-matriculation. However, even this 'help' is being perceived today merely as way of coaching, which arms students with memorizing techniques requiring minimum efforts to achieve 'pseudo' success of scoring high marks.
I believe that we don't require coaching but proper training to prepare students for IITs so that they serve their true purpose. Such training should nurture students to realize their inner spark, which can be developed with self efforts. As great saint Paramahansa Yogananda has said, "Training brings out talent that is already within. It cannot bring forth sprouts if seeds are not already there. Training not only encourages a seed to grow into a plant, it has the additional merit of improving the quality of the seed through culture". The implementation of this would require a broad thought process and selfless dedicated teachers, who perceive education not merely as a source of bread but as a pious activity contributing to society.
