HRD ministry, JEE get notice on admissions

The AP High Court on Thursday issued notices to the Union ministry for human resources and development, JEE apex and the executive director JEE (Main), on a petition challenging the procedure notified by authorities for admission into engineering courses in National Institute of Technology and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions.

While dealing with the plea by Ch. Rahul Anand and Yash Mehrotra of the city, Justice Ramesh Ranganathan made it clear that all the admissions that were made and are being made will be subject to the final outcome of the petition.

Gandra Mohan Rao, counsel for the petitioner told the court the JEE is the main gateway to obtain admissions in NITS and CFTIs and the authorities have introduced a system called normalisation process to arrive at a common assessment level after comparing the intermediate marks awarded by as many 42 intermediate boards all over the country situated in various states.

Counsel said the new procedure would be detrimental to the prospectus of students who studied in state syllabus and beneficial to CBSE students. The authorities were told to convey a message to those already selected that their admissions would be subject to further orders of the court.

Order on STBs reserved by HC

A Division Bench comprising Justice N.V. Ramana and Justice Vilas V. Afzulpurkar of the AP High Court on Thursday reserved its order on petitions challenging the Centre’s decision in fixing a deadline for installation of set top boxes (STBs) in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam.

The Bench heard arguments on PILs by Cable TV Operators Welfare Association and other individuals challenging the Centre’s decision. The Bench granted an interim order on the PILs in April by directing the authorities not to take coercive steps against anyone in the name of implementing the notification to install set-top boxes to receive TV transmission, for a period of two weeks. Later, the interim orders were extended.

Counsels for the petitioners contended that the Centre had a duty to supply STBs and other software for digitisation of cable networks and unless a competent statutory authority oversees the supply in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam at affordable rates, the notification issued cannot be implemented.

Counsel representing the Centre urged the court vacate the interim orders and said that the STBs would be useful to the consumers to see TV channels of their choice. The Bench asked the assistant solicitor general to file an affidavit informing the steps taken by the government on the issue before reserving its orders.

HC?summons Agri Commissioner

Expressing dismay at the authorities for sympathising with the farming community, a Division Bench comprising Justice N.V. Ramana and Justice Vilas Afzulpurkar on Thursday summoned the commissioner of agriculture to be present in court next week to explain the reasons for delay in filing a response.

The Bench was dealing with a petition by farmers challenging the action of the government in appointing a committee comprising three senior officers to determine the compensation for supplying faulty seeds to them.

Stop repair on Tungabhadra

A writ petition was filed in the AP High Court on Thursday opposing the decision to take up repair works to the Tungabhadra irrigation canal during the rainy season. T. Ramu, former president of the Kurnool District Water Distributory Committee, moved the plea urging the court to stay further proceedings pursuant to the tender notification issued by the superintendent engineer of Tungabhadra Board to carry out repair works.

Objection sought on N mart probe

Justice Noushad Ali on Thursday asked the Crime Investigation Department to inform whether it had any objection on a petition by the New Look Retails Private Ltd (N Mart) to transfer the probe of all the cases registered against the firm in various parts of the state to the CID. The firm urged the court to declare the multiple FIRs and investigations against it as illegal. Elsewhere, Justice Ali directed the cops to continue armed police escort to D. Chandrasekhar Reddy, former MLA of YSR Congress at his own cost for a week.
