$174.8 million Japan aid to IIT-Hyderabad
Japan will provide $174.8 million (around 870 cr) loan as development aid to the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H), the biggest-ever foreign aid to an IIT, which experts said will have a leapfrog effect on the standard of higher education in the state and boost infrastructure.
Shashi Tharoor asks IITs to double research work
The IITs need to pull up their socks and spend more on research, Union human resource development minister Shashi Tharoor has said.
Speaking at the Sri Sai Ram College of Engineering convocation in the city on Wednesday, Tharoor said that he has asked the IITs and IISC to double their research work. "We have several universities with good teaching facilities, but inadequate or no research facilities," he said. "Although the IITs are top ranking institutes in the country which carry out much research, it is still not enough considering their ranking."
Tharoor added that under ideal conditions, at least 30% of a university's funding should be earmarked for research. "Today we have a mismatch between the education given by colleges and the skills sets sought by companies," he said. "That is why companies often put a new recruit under a year's training, despite his specialized education. An expansion beyond teaching might just help."
Agreeing to this, Bhaskar Ramamurthi, director for IIT Madras said their research contribution depended on the number of students who opt for a PhD on the campus. "We now draw in 200 students for PhD every year," he said. "We are trying to increase it to 350 per year by introducing a sandwich course comprising both masters and PhD."
But the outlook is not altogether grim, said Ramamurthi. "Today, India's ranking for publishing research papers has improved from 15th worldwide to ninth. The number of PhD students in IITs is four times higher than it was 10 years ago. All we need is for the new IITs to reach similar targets."
Coming out in support of Delhi University's decision to introduce a four-year undergraduate programme, Tharoor said, "It would be wrong for politicians to oppose the decisions of a university, when all they are doing is what they are meant to do; bringing in academic reforms." He said that while it is always difficult to bring in reforms, this one had the potential to deliver, and as such should be encouraged.

Dreams come true for these CET toppers
From her school days itself, Suhaasini Hangal was driven to architecture. Well-designed buildings and interiors always fascinated her. Being the daughter of architect parents, she too wanted to become one, and Tuesday's CET results paved way for her.
Suhaasini secured sixth rank in architecture stream in CET. She scored 95 per cent in PCM. She is the daughter of Veena Hangal and Dinesh Hangal, both architects, and great granddaughter of music doyenne Gangubai Hangal. She studied in Chetana PU College in Akshay Colony in the city.
Speaking to TOI, Suhaasini said: "I focused on architecture from my school days as I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my parents. I used to study for about two hours a day at home. I used to be very attentive at classes and revised the lessons at home every day without fail," she said.
Expressing happiness over her daughter's performance Veena Hangal said: "I am a proud mother today. I had expected my daughter to secure rank within 10. I am glad that she has lived up to it."

95% students clear OJEE
As many as 90,889 (95%) students, of 95,278 who took the test, have qualified the Odisha Joint Entrance Examination-2013 (OJEE), the results of which were declared here on Thursday. This is probably the last OJEE for engineering as state colleges may take students from JEE (main) from next year. This year medical colleges in the state opted out of the OJEE.
Announcing the results, technical education minister Pratap Keshari Deb said, "OJEE was conducted with utmost discipline this year by implementing two-tier observer system and video recording important events of the examination process. The counselling will begin from second week of June."
Sansit Patnaik of Mother's Public School has topped the engineering stream with Anuva Aiswarya being the topper among girls.
The other candidates, who have bagged top honours in the OJEE, are Siba Narayan Padhi (topper) and Sibani Mishra (topper among girls) from Berhampur in pharmacy. Similarly Ankit Kumar Tripathy of Dhenkanal and Banani Sarangi of Kahalia have topped MBA while D Srikant of Jeypore amd Kajal Nayak of Khallikote have emerged the toppers in MCA.

Kannur girl bags 13th rank in IIT-M entrance exam
One month was all she got to prepare for the entrance examination of the coveted Humanities and Social Science Course of IIT-Madras. But this 17-year old girl from Kannur cracked the test in style and was ranked 13th in the all-India level test.
Meet Shalini Jithendran of Prashanthi House at Kuttimakkal near Thalassery in Kannur, who brought laurels to her native place by getting into one of the most prestigious institutions in the country.
IIT-M’s Humanities and Social Science is a five-year-long Integrated M.A. course for the best 46 students in the country. Shalini says she was never keen on applying for the Humanities course as she was preparing for medical and entrance examinations from Kanjirappally in Kottayam.
“I was taking coaching for medical and engineering entrance exams while studying in St. Antony’s Public School in Kanjirappally. I came to know about the IIT-M course very late and so I had only a month to prepare for it.
Ecology, History, Economics, Analytical Ability and English were the subjects of the entrance test. I referred to my old Economic textbooks, which helped me a lot. But it came as a surprise when I scored top marks and was ranked 13th,” she says.
After clearing the IIT-M test she has decided to leave her medicine and engineering aspirations behind and join the Humanities and Social Science course.

IIT-Kanpur's helicopter service to Lucknow begins
The IIT-Kanpur became the first institute in the country to provide air connectivity between two cities. The helicopter service between the institute and Lucknow was inaugurated on Thursday. The inaugural ceremony was held at the institute to launch the services of Pawan Hans helicopter.
The function was held at the runway of the flight club in the presence of IIT-K director Indranil Manna, Anil Srivastava, CMD, Pawan Hans and joint secretary, ministry of civil aviation, members of Merchants Chamber of Uttar Pradesh, including its secretary general Anita Jha and IM Rohtagi, industralist Irshad Mirza, faculty members and students. The helicopter took off during the inaugural ceremony to mark the start of the service. From June 1, the services will be available initially to the people of IIT-K.
The authorities of Pawan Hans said that it is a matter of pride that Pawan Hans has taken the initiative to launch its helicopter services between IIT-Kanpur and Lucknow. IIT-K has been declared as the institute of national importance by the Union government. Pawan Hans, known as Asia's premier helicopter company, understand the importance of education and helicopters. This business model of Pawan Hans 'Pawan Hans-Connect IIT' will give a boost to knowledge sharing in today's faster mode of connectivity among other IITs and business schools with helicopters which will also give access to academicians, foreign faculties, professionals, MNCs and students to promote/share knowledge through a faster mode of travel.
The occasion for launching Pawan Hans services for IIT-K has created the right atmosphere for establishing a significant relationship between Pawan Hans and the institute. The event would also trigger series of steps towards establishing air/helicopter connectivity between other educational Institutes like IIMs and IITs in the country. This service will provide IITians & local business associates to travel across the locations efficiently and in a time-bound manner while keeping in mind the value of time and cost.
Students will get more corporate exposure from leaders in its class. Both the organization may take the leverage of technology in aviation. It may give more flexibility to academicians and professional with less travel time. The experience and expertise of Pawan Hans has been developing. The company's dedication in serving the nation and maintaining its position as undisputed leader with a fleet size of 53 helicopters is praiseworthy.
Srivastava said that the company is proud to be associated with the country's premier technical Institute and both the organizations stand to gain from this unique business initiative. He said that over a period of time, Pawan Hans has plans to expand its wings in the area of Seaplane services and to provide regional connectivity through small fixed wing aircraft operations, setting up helicopters training & safety institute and also develop Heliports/Helipads in the country. Pawan Hans has been playing pivotal role in providing air connectivity across the country by way of meeting the vital requirements of offshore operation, regular passenger services particularly in the remote and inaccessible areas of north east region, intra-city transportation and charter services to promote travel and tourism.

IIT aspirants gear up for D-day
This Sunday, over 2,500 students in the city will write the JEE (Advanced) — one of the toughest exams in the country — that will determine their entry into the Indian Institutes of Technology. Curiously, sources said that out of the 1.5 lakh students who had qualified in the JEE (Mains) exam all over the country, only 1.26 lakh students registered for the advanced test.
“This is because many students who have scored just a little more than the cut-off in the qualifying exam feel it is unnecessary to even attempt the advanced exam. However, this does not mean that the competition will come down as the brightest are in the fray,” said Raghavendra Nair, a chemistry teacher. This is the first time a two-tier exam system is in place for entry into the 16 IITs.
Nearly 30,000 students from the southern region have qualified for the test. Of these, 2,643 students are from Chennai and 555 from other parts of the State. In Tamil Nadu, the exam will be held at Chennai and Madurai. Over 33,000 students from the western region and more than 24,000 candidates from the Delhi region have qualified for JEE (Advanced). The exam will be conducted by IIT-Delhi in collaboration with IIT-Kanpur and IIT-Bombay.
Experts continue to be divided over the benefits of the two-exam system. While some believe that it has only added to anxiety among students who had to register twice and perform well in school exams too, others note that the system took out the element of luck.
“There are multiple filters introduced, and only students proficient in clearing all kinds of questions will make it to the IITs. It no longer depends on how good your form is on one particular day,” said Mr. Nair.
Nearly 10, 000 candidates will be selected at the end of the test.
Pawan Kumar, head of the dept of Physics, Fiitjee, believes the test is likely to be tough with questions from a lot of new areas. “It is likely that the maximum score will be in the 400-500 range, with the same number of questions in each paper and in each subject. Of these, nearly 30 per cent of the questions will be very easy; 30 to 40 per cent might be moderately difficult and the rest challenging. Students should be very careful about negative marking,” Mr. Pawan said. Any student who can solve the easy questions and 50 per cent of the remaining questions can easily get a decent rank in IIT, he added.
He also warned of a few unexpected questions. “Previously untouched topics such as matrices, vector, 3D etc. have become more important. So, candidates should go through these sections well.”
The likelihood of such questions is worrying quite a few candidates too. Many even took the JEE (Mains) test in the paper-pen format on April 7 so that they could get more time to prepare.
D. Ramprasad, one such student, said “Topics such as electricity, magnetism, optics, experimental physics, error analysis become quite important in this context.”
The two-test pattern was difficult for officials too. “We were not sure of the relative performances of various States. So it took us a while to decide how many exam centres to allot to each State,” said an official from IIT- Delhi.

Normalization puts premium on Board results, makes JEE (Main) redundant
The normalization process worked out for admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and other central government technical educational institutions is turning out to be more complicated and cumbersome than what the CBSE had claimed.
The way normalization is being worked out it could result in a student with high score in JEE (Main) and not so low percentage in Class XII (say 90%) could have a rank much lower than a friend who scored less in JEE (Main) but had a higher percentage in the Board results.
For admission, it was decided to use the JEE (Main) performance and the normalized Board performance in the 60:40 ratio. But after the JEE (Main) results were out, the JEE Interface Group has come up with the novel normalization formula, which is as follows: C = 0.6 X Ao + 0.4 X Bfinal, where (Ao) component is aggregate marks obtained by each student in JEE (Main) and Bfinal component corresponds to the Board percentile. The final rank of the student in the JEE (Main) will be decided by C.
The normalization process decided by the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Interface Group for the Class XII marks component is as follows: 50% of Board marks be normalized by equating percentile among different Boards and anchoring them to All India JEE (Main) percentiles, and 50% be normalized by equating each Board's percentile with JEE (Main) percentile marks of respective Boards.
Many students and parents are pointing out that the normalization system is not working out. The moot point is if a student scores 95%, just 2% more than his friend who gets 93% in the Board it would mean he has scored 10 extra marks (CBSE: 5 subjects each for maximum marks 100). But this two per cent marks will be resulting into a big difference in JEE marks mapping, which won't be uniformly distributed.
For instance, a student Tom gets first rank in JEE (Main). He scored 345/360. Tom also scored 90% in CBSE class XII examination. Let's make a fair assumption that these marks will probably correspond to about 93 percentile in the boards. Now, for the calculation of 40% equivalent from Boards: If there are 12 lakh people giving JEE (Main), this person will be allotted marks equivalent to 93 percentile of the JEE (Main) ranks. The official cut-off declared for JEE (Advanced) is 113 with a rank of 75,000 for general category. Probably this year 93 percentile in JEE (Main) would correspond to about 84,000 rank (7% of 12 lakh applicants) and corresponding marks would be about 113 only.
So Tom will get B final component (B1). JEE (Main) aggregate marks corresponding to percentile at the All India level) + B2: (JEE-Main aggregate marks corresponding to percentile among the set of aggregate scores obtained in the JEE (Main) by the students of that board) in the formula approximately as 0.4X113=45.2 marks. (This is on the assumption that B1 and B2 components remain almost same in the case of CBSE). So total marks of Tom will be C =0.6x345+0.4x110=207+45.2=262.2
Now if a student Peter gets 200 marks in JEE (Main) and 97.5% in boards then probably he is at 99.98 percentile and corresponding to this he will get 330 marks in JEE (Main). (If we map 99.98 percentile to JEE main percentile then marks for B-final component would be 330. His B final component will be 0.4x330=132. So total marks of Peter will be C =0.6x200+0.4x330=120+132=252.
The error is self-evident. Tom with high JEE (Main) score but slightly less percentage in CBSE gets only 45.2 marks in the Board component whereas Peter with 200 marks in JEE (Main) but 97.5% in CBSE Board gets 132 in the Board component, a massive difference of 86.8 marks. Someone gets 90% in CBSE Board and ranks first in JEE (Main) might not even figure in top final ranking of NITs and other central government educational institutions. "This is just stupid," a parent says.

25000 students eligible for JEE Advanced will not appear for test
JEE Main results were declared on May 7th, CBSE declared list of top 1.52 Lakhs students in JEE Main who were eligible for JEE Advanced. Reportedly 25000 students who are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced are not writing test.
Various reasons behind this are listed below:
1. Some students are eligible for JEE Advanced but they are not under top 20 percentile in their respective boards, so they are not writing test.
2. Many candidates filled the forms as Other Backward Class (OBC) candidates but they fall in categories that are on the OBC list in their own states and not in the central list, so they will not be eligible.
3. Some students are eligible for JEE Advanced but they want admission in their state engg colleges only, so they will not sit for JEE Advanced.

CLAT 2013 Result declared, Topper Scores 160.75
The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2013 results have been announced for 27,627
national law university LLB aspirants and 1242 LLM aspirants.
Top under-graduate (UG) list ranker Dhruv Murari Gandhi has obtained 160.75 out of 200 marks, while introducing 25 per cent negative marking for the first time has led to docketing decimated marks and a lowest score of -1.
While Gandhi trumped last year’s highest score of 159, the slide down the ranks has been greater this year than in 2012. Last year NLSIU Bangalore’s general list cut-off closed at 147 marks for rank 58, while Nalsar Hyderabad closed at 142 for rank 117. This year those two ranks have respectively obtained 140.5 and 136.5 marks, the latter being lower than NUJS Kolkata’s cut-off marks of 137 last year.
Negative marking has helped loosen up the range of top 200 marks to 29 this year from 20 last year, and smaller groups of people tied at the same score – the group of 10 tied at 135.25 marks from rank 134 to rank 143 is the biggest tie in the top 200.
The top 200 were all general category candidates but two.
LLM
The highest scorer Neha Sharma obtained 90.5 marks and the last person to secure a one-year or two-year LLM program seat in the first list this year, rank 416 obtained 41.5 marks.
The last seat in the one-year LLM program will go to rank 374, with a score of 43, in the first list.
LLM candidates were yesterday allowed to submit fresh law school preferences online to the CLAT core committee before 5 June in view of the mid-year restructuring of the traditional two-year LLM degree.
