State government is considering holding an entrance exam for engineering diploma students aiming to get admission into degree courses. A proposal in this regard was sent by the admission committee to the state government last week.
There are 55,000 engineering degree seats in Gujarat. Out of these 11,000 are to be filled by direct entry into the third semester of the students who have finished their engineering diploma. In addition, there are 8,500 more seats available for diploma pass outs. These seats had remained vacant from first semester onwards in the degree courses.
Sources said that the entrance exam will be held after the final semester exams of the diploma courses. The questions in this exam will be objective-type based on the content of the last three semesters of the diploma course. General knowledge, soft skills and knowledge of pure science of the students will also be tested in the paper.
The students are not happy at the move of the admission committee to hold an entrance exam. "This is a wrong move. How many entrance exams do we have to take? Why should we be compelled to prepare for yet another exam after working hard for final semester papers?" said Jay Talati, who is pursuing diploma course in mechanical engineering.
Another student Aashini Sharma said, "This is simply increasing the burden on the students. We had chosen the diploma route to a degree course to avoid engineering entrance exams. It appears our dream will remain unfulfilled."
Till now students passing their diploma examination were entitled for admission in the third semester of degree courses on the basis of merit. Twenty per cent of the total seats were reserved for such candidates coming from diploma courses.
The government delayed the decision to hold entrance exam for the last one year because of the assembly polls that were held in December.
