Even though the HRD ministry had taken several steps to do away with the impact of coaching centres on students, several JEE (main) toppers seem to have migrated from one school to another to get trained in top coaching centres.
Sai Praveen, a student of Maharishi International Residential School, who scored 331 of 360 in JEE (main), results for which were released on Tuesday, said he had studied in a private school in Salem till class X and he had to switch over to Maharishi to get trained by FIITJEE under the two-year integrated school programme for JEE (main and advanced) with the school.
“Coaching by trainers helps us a lot as they guide us of how to get top scores,” he said, adding that he aspires to study computer science engineering in one of the IITs.
Exuding confidence that he would score top marks in JEE (advanced), Sooraj Narayan, another student who scored 330 of 360, said he too had take extra coaching apart from his school studies as every mark counts for JEE (advanced). “I had to shift from a top CBSE school in Anna Nagar West to get IIT coaching as it helped me to crack JEE (main),” he added.
Former deputy director of IIT Madras and Professor Emeritus V. G. Idichandy who headed the IIT-JEE reform committee in 2007 said with intense competition among students one cannot do away coaching centres. “We lay more emphasis on school board marks in ranking and this will make coaching centres teach school syllabus too,” he said.
About Tuesday’s JEE (main) results, eminent academician and career counsellor Jayaprakash A. Gandhi pointed out that CBSE had not made it clear that whether it would use the regular normalisation method or standard deviation to normalise students’ mark.
