West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination board to upload answer scripts

Engineering aspirants who took the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) this year will be able to see their OMR (optical mark recognition) sheets on the board's website before the results are formally announced.

"We will upload the OMR sheets before the results are brought out," said board chairman Bhaskar Gupta on Monday. "Along with that, the answer data captured by the software, too, will be indicated. In case a student is not convinced with the answers captured by the software, they can appeal to the board online. We will immediately verify whether the data captured was erroneous. Candidates will be given a week to appeal to the board," he added.

Initially, the board had planned to bring out the results by within May. "But this process will delay the results," said Gupta. Though the students will know their score after reviewing the OMR sheets, the ranks will be unknown. "Only after the formal publication of the results will the students know their ranks," Gupta said.

The model answers will be available online in the next two days. "Counselling will be delayed becausof the delay in the publication of AIEEE results. Around 10% of seats in private engineering colleges are reserved for AIEEE candidates. Hence, we will have to wait for them," said Gupta.

This year is the first time that the WBJEE has been held only for engineering aspirants. "The number of seats in engineering colleges is likely to remain the same. We are waiting for confirmation from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) regarding their approval of any more private engineering colleges," said a source in the state higher education department.

Like last year, the JEE board has decided to award ranks to all students who took the test. "The only criterion to get a rank is to score positive marks. If the OMR sheets are uploaded on the website, candidates themselves will know their scores," Gupta said.In 2013, the WBJEE board's office was under siege by several parents and candidates who could not find their ranks. "What they misunderstood was without a positive score no one was given a rank. They must have scored less than a positive score," said a senior board official.
