Parents of engineering aspirants have brought it to the notice of the OdishaJEE authorities that engineering counseling of OJEE ahead of counseling for IITs and NITs may result in large scale vacancies in government engineering colleges.
The web-based online counseling process of Odisha JEE 2013 started on June 10. Parents apprehend that students with good ranks will enroll themselves with various government engineering colleges and good private engineering colleges under OJEE, but will later back out when they make it to the IITs or NITs. Their seats will remain vacant since counseling for the OJEE would be over by then.
In a letter to the OJEE chairman, the guardians of aspiring OJEE students said since the final results of the JEE of IITs and NITs are yet to be published, the aspiring students have no idea about their position. "Under such circumstances, students with high possibility of qualifying for the IITs and NITs will book their seats in different engineering colleges of the state as per their ranks through OJEE. As the last date of withdrawal of this counseling has been fixed by OJEE authorities on 27th June 2013, it is quite obvious that the counseling process of OJEE this year would be over before the beginning of counseling of IITs and NITs," it pointed out.
The letter added that it is quite obvious that even after taking admission to engineering colleges, the students would opt to enroll themselves with the IITs and NITs, if qualified, as a result of which the seats vacated by those students are going to remain vacant. "In the process, hundreds of lower rank students of the state will be deprived of admission to engineering colleges of the state," it further said.
"We have requested the OJEE authorities to postpone the date of withdrawal from OJEE 2013 counseling process till the counseling process of IIT and NITs is over," said S C Chaudhury, the father of an OJEE aspirant.
"We have sent a copy of our representation addressed to the chairman of OJEE to the state higher education minister, requesting his intervention into the matter," said S N Das, father of another OJEE aspirant.
OJEE authorities acknowledged the concern of the guardians, but expressed their inability to do anything about it. "We are aware of the facts which are being raised by the guardians, but since the Supreme court has given a directive to AICTE to complete the counseling process in states by the end of June, we can do nothing. We have to complete the process within that deadline," said OJEE secretary Priyabrata Sahu.
