Now, you can do bachelor of engineering in nanotechnology in Karnataka

There is a huge demand for bachelor of engineering (BE) graduates in nanotechnology from various industries. But only few institutes in South India offer BE in nanotechnology. Here is good news for students. City-based Srinivas Institute of Technology will offer this course from this academic year.

Former presdient APJ Abdul Kalam has been stressing on the significance of nanotechnology for the country's development, while addressing Children Science Congress centenary celebrations in Kolkata in January 2013 and in other such fora.

Students who join the course will be exposed to subjects like applications of nanotechnology, synthesis of nanomaterials and nano-biotechnology.

Shrinivas Mayya, principal of the institute, told TOI that there was a lucrative job opportunity for nanotechnology graduates. It is estimated that there is need for nearly 5 million nanotechnology graduates to work at various industries across the world by 2016. "Ours is the first college in the state to offer undergraduate course in nanotechnology," he said.

Stating that nanotechnology has the potential to change every part of our lives, he said application of nanotechnology is widely used in sectors like medicine, electronics, agriculture and food.

Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter at a scale of 1 to 100 nanometres. Using nanotechnology, molecules can be controlled at an atomic level and materials can be created with unique properties. Fundamentally properties of materials can be changed by nanotechnology. Molecules can be arranged in such a way that they do not normally occur in nature. The strength, electronic and optical properties of materials can be altered using nanotechnology.
