IIT Madras new initiative to discuss all issues with sexual minority

Indian institute of technology, Madras is going o start a new initiative to support the group of sexual minorities in the institute, where the students will come forward and open up about issues they face, and ask for help if they need any. In August 2011,IIT-Bombay became the first Indian educational institution to set up a support group for sexual minorities.

The institute took this initiative after one gay student discussed about all difficulties to Mitr, chief advisor of IIT-M’s guidance and counselling unit. “This student was confident of handling the issues, but he said that there may be others like him, and they may be silently suffering and may need help,” said chief adviser of Mitr.
The institute has also opened a new panel where all other students can also discuss many other sensitive issues, like substance abuse and sexual harassment faced by women on campus.
Most probably this new initiative by IIT-M and IIT-B will also set an example for other higher educational institutes across the country.
