Muted start to last Maharashtra's engineering entrance

Enrolment for the last edition of Maharashtra's common entrance exam for engineering colleges has finally started, after many delays, though on a muted note. From next year, the state's exam will be replaced by the new national Joint Entrance Exam (JEE). The delayed start is due to major changes being made in the exam administration process.

Rajnikanth Bondre, owner of a local coaching class, said, "Usually by first week of February the exam dates were announced through a notification but this year it has been delayed." As is the practice, all applications will be routed through the students' colleges.

A highly placed source in the technical education department told TOI that administrative control of the exam is being handed over to them. "Earlier, the department of medical education and research (DMER) was handling everything but now they are out of the picture. We have been told to be prepared to take over and a notification is expected by March first week," the official said.

DMER is out of the picture because of changes to the national entrance exam policy. In Maharashtra, the entrance exam for medical and engineering colleges were always conducted by the same authority and the exam even had a common name, MHT-CET. Students pursuing medical stream would opt for biology as their exam subject, while engineering aspirants would choose physics. Math and chemistry were common to both. But, in summer 2013, Maharashtra will go with the new national medical entrance exam called NEET, with engineering exam to continue for only one more year.

Students have been asked to fill up the application form and deposit fee with their respective colleges. Jaspal Singh, principal of Guru Nanak High School and Junior College, said, "By this week we have to gather all the applications and collect fees in cash from students. Then we will make a demand draft and submit it along with the application forms to the officials. The exam date has not been announced yet."
