Improvement exam marks to count for JEE

Marks secured in improvement exams in Intermediate (10+2) Board exams will be considered while selecting students in the top-20 percentile list for admission to IITs.

This comes as a good news for students who want to improve their marks and enter the top-20 percentile list. However, the improvement results have to be provided by the respective boards to the IITs by June 30.

From this year, a rank in JEE (Advanced) will not be enough to get a seat in IIT. Selected students should also figure in the top-20 percentile list of their 10+2 Board exams to be eligible for final admission.

Out of 3.70 lakh students who took the Intermediate final year exam for the MPC stream this year, only 1.24 lakh figured in the top-20 percentile list.

The cut-off marks for general category students to figure in this list were 89.81 per cent, 84.34 per cent for SCs, 85.28 per cent for STs and 88.30 per cent for other categories.

As many as 75,890 students from the general category; 8,452 from SCs; 3,111 from STs and; 36,626 from other reserved categories made it to the top-20 percentile list this year.

Many students who failed to secure these cut-off marks wanted to appear for improvement exams but they were not sure whether the ‘improved’ marks would be considered for JEE or not.

However, the IITs came out with a clarification that improvement marks will be considered, provided results are out by June 30.

According to the IITs, the Council of Boards of School Education in India  will provide the marks which correspond to the top 20 percentile of each board.

The marks obtained by students in their respective subjects — mathematics, physics, chemistry /computer science /biology /biotechnology and any language — would be averaged and for a student to secure a place in IITs, this average should not be less than the marks provided by the COBSE.
