One-time engineering fee halved

The state government has decided to reduce the one-time fee during admissions to private engineering colleges from Rs 40,000 till last year to Rs 20,000.

"Students enrolling in colleges under West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT) will have to pay Rs 74,000 a year, of which Rs 20,000 will be during admission. Till last year, students had to pay Rs 72,000 a year, of which Rs 40,000 was to be paid during admission," said a senior West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board member.

"This will be beneficial for those who leave for other places after taking admissions in private engineering colleges. In most cases, colleges do not refund the amount. Moreover, this will also benefit those who cannot afford to make the one-time payment," said vice-chancellor of WBUT, Samir Bandyopadhyay.

Education minister Bratya Basu said: "We have decided to provide 25% seats in private engineering colleges to the financially weaker section of the students." Bandyopadhyay added: "From this year, it will be mandatory for all private engineering colleges to reserve 25% seats in full and half freeship programmes."

Director of Technical Education, Sajal Dasgupta said, "The e-counselling was introduced during the TMC regime from 2012-2013 session. This has received responses from all corner of the state even from the far away districts." DTE claimed that all courses being taught throughout the nation has been uniquely presented in the state of West Bengal. Therefore a large amount of students from outside the stat has responded for admissions in Bengal from this year onwards
