80,000 leave Hyderabad for JEE

Nearly 80,000 students left the city on Saturday for Warangal, Khammam and Guntur to appear for the first JEE (Main) to be held in the offline mode on Sunday.

Though there is another centre in Tirupati, the nearly 700-km distance to the temple town was a deterrent. Warangal is 125 km from the city, Khammam about 200 km and Guntur, well served by buses and trains, about 300 km.

While about 30,000 students each have left for Warangal and Guntur respectively, about 20,000 students have gone to Khammam to ace the exam. The students, accompanied by their parents and guardians left a day in advance, fearing traffic congestion.

1.3L from AP to write JEE today

Last year, students had faced several hardships, including traffic jams in Warangal city as well as along the Hyderabad-Warangal highway while going to write the JEE (Main).

The smaller cities were bustling with the students arriving by bus, car, taxi and train from the morning. Boarding and lodging facilities have been severely strained. Hotels and lodges are booked and NGOs, colleges, schools and function halls are volunteering to provide free accommodation to applicants and their parents.

The state government has directed the district collectors to make suitable arrangements so that the exam is conducted without a hitch on Sunday.

This year, nearly 14.5 lakh students have registered for JEE (Main) across the country, 1.5 lakh from Andhra Pradesh alone. While 1.3 lakh students have opted to take the exam in the offline mode on April 7, the remainder will write it online between April 9 and 25.

Despite the CBSE setting up online exam centres in Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Vizag, students have opted to write the conventional offline exam being held in tier-II cities, anticipating technical glitches in the online mode of the exam.

The JEE (Main), which replaced AIEEE this year, is being held for admission to NITs, IIITs, top deemed universities and other Centrally-funded technical institutions. For the first time, 40 per cent weightage will be given to 10+2 marks while determining the rank in JEE (Main).
