New-age JEE mentors dish out last-mile tips to engineering hopefuls

Another bustling economy is giving company to call centres. Tutoring lakhs of JEE aspirants has been a crowded market for long but new-age classes have sensed opportunities in the dark, literally so, with hectic rounds of all-night coaching sessions.

It is that time of the year when countdown to an exam is measured in hours. Little wonder then that last-minute tutorial teachers say their job is tougher than those at regular coaching classes. So are the tools.

Two recent graduates of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay have started a mentoring service for JEE aspirants. On their company's rolls are second- and third-year students of the Powai campus and of IIT Delhi who offer their advice for a price. "Coaching classes are available all-year round but special attention is needed closer to the exam date," said director and co-founder Narendra Agrawal. "The mode of content delivery is through the phone," he said.

A student who signs up is connected to an existing IIT student who is just a call away for any help or last-minute difficulty. This year, 100 students have signed up for this mentorship tutorial.

Again for as little as Rs 25, a learning solutions company has developed a cross-platform product and its flagship product is 'Videos2learn', a five-minute learning video series. This application has been designed to deliver trainer-led video lessons which help students understand and assimilate various concepts.

Several students are logging online for last-minute updates and tips from friends and coaching classes. Ajithesh N, an IIT aspirant, has downloaded last-minute video tips from a service provider. The post board exam pack for JEE (Main) enabled him to revise the complete JEE syllabus for physics, chemistry and biology on his phone in the two weeks between his board exam and the JEE (Main) exam. The online education service provider has designed the pack in a form that it can be downloaded on iPads and android device too, making it convenient for students.

Praveen Tyagi, from an IIT coaching institute, said they uploaded last-minute tips on their coaching class's website on Friday evening for their students. Coaching classes are also trying to reach out to students on social networking sites by posting last minute tips, expert advice and answer keys for last year's paper on Twitter and Facebook.

Then there are other reasons why tutor companies are adopting technology. Pavan Chauhan, managing director of a dotcom company in the education space, said, "With the possibility of the JEE going completely online from 2014, the need of the hour is to switch to practising for JEE online with experts who will be able to not only help you understand your concepts better with attractive and completely engaging multimedia tutorials, but can also help you continuously monitor and assess your understanding of the topics in a rigorous manner"

Several students from the city will appear for their exam from a centre in Thane on Sunday as the city has only one centre and that too will hold the computer-based exam from April 8 to 25.

The pen-and-paper test for JEE (Main) has a centre in Thane, and the ones who have not managed to get a seat will appear from the Pune centre.
