JEE makes amends, will allow correction of data on exam day

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), which is now the sole gateway to government funded engineering colleges and prestigious IITs, had left students in a fix during the online application process. In the online form, students had to fill in their Std XII roll number but that information was missing in the final printout of admit card.

With their Std XII roll number not visible on admit card these students had no way of ascertaining if they had indeed filled in the right information. Now CBSE, which is conducting the JEE main, is making amends. It has introduced a procedure to allow students to check their roll number and make correction but it could only be done on the day of examination.

In a press note, CBSE informed that on the day of JEE paper, students will be given an 'authentication sheet' that shall have their board roll number mentioned. If there is an error, students can rectify it by hand and submit it back to the exam invigilator. However, it is mandatory for such students to submit a photocopy of their board document such as final marksheet, statement of marks or copy of their admit cards. The admit cards as documentary proof is applicable to students appearing for the board exams in 2013 while those who appeared last year will have to give marksheet or statement of marks.

Students will have to write their JEE roll numbers on the copy of the Std XII document being submitted. The authentication sheet will be distributed to all students irrespective of whether they are appearing for a computer-based test or the traditional pen-paper one.

The press note, however, tries to pass the blame on students by saying that many "students have committed mistakes while submitting roll numbers". While that may be the case, it does not talk about the website not having facility to allow student to view what they entered and make correction right away, a major shortcoming. Now all students will have to carry copy of Std XII admit card or marksheet for an outside chance that they might have entered their roll number incorrectly.
