More than 3,000 to answer Goa Common Entrance Test today

Over 3,000 students will answer the Goa Common Entrance Test (GCET) to be held on May 8 and 9 for admissions to seats in engineering and pharmacy institutes in the state. For the first time, the exam will be held only for three subjects-physics, mathematics and chemistry.

This year the centralized National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) was held on May 5 for admissions to medicine and dentistry seats across the country and the merit list will be drawn up in Delhi for institutes all over India. Until 2012, GCET was conducted for entry to all professional courses in Goa, including medicine and dentistry.

Usually, around 3,500 answer the GCET, but the NEET has brought down the number this year.

Four sets of questions for each subject are prepared for the GCET and no two students sitting side-by-side get the same question paper, to avoid copying of answers.

Each GCET paper consists of 75 objective questions of one mark each with four options. The students have to fill the bubble next to the correct option and the answer sheets are evaluated electronically. The impression of the bubble marked appears on another answer sheet attached to the original copy. Students take this carbon copy home and can tell where they stand within minutes.

At centres where more than 300 students are answering the test, like Don Bosco High School in Panaji, Deepvihar High School in Vasco, AJ de Almeida High School in Ponda and the centres in Mapusa and Navelim, a deputy presiding officer, other than the presiding office, is appointed as an added precaution. Official sources said that the results of the GCET are expected before May 15.
