Gujarat high court orders state government to prepare a new merit list

Yesterday Gujarat high court ordered Gujarat state government to prepare a fresh merit list for all state engineering colleges that will be completely based on marks obtained by students in HSC and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).
The high court issued this order on the basis of petition filed by a group of students who were having very poor rank in the merit list prepared by Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) though they had secured high ranks in both the exams.
The high court said that state government has issued a new formula by violating the rules of the engineering admission and it is illegal. “The ACPC has calculated such a formula which is a travesty of justice for students who had secured high rank. According to the merit list, the high-ranked students were thrown far behind those who have secured less marks in both the JEE and board exams,” said the lawyer.
High court strictly ordered the government to adopt a new formula . “We have found that the procedure adopted by the authorities is most unreasonable as it was not solely based on the performance of candidates in the two examinations prescribed. Considering the entire materials on record, we declare that the merit list has not been prepared in accordance with the existing rules and at the same time, the method adopted violates Article 14 of the Constitution of India,” said the bench.
