Students run helter-skelter to attend simultaneous counselling

Students who successfully cleared the Joint Entrance Exam-Advanced (formerly known as entrance for IITs) are finding it difficult to handle the counselling of different premier engineering colleges running at same period. The JEE exam, aimed at helping students to desist from appearing in different entrance exams, has given no respite due to the separate counsellings.

Neelima Gaur, a resident of Kota, who bagged 5,928 all India rank in JEE-Advanced, secured a seat in BHU. She had visited Delhi for documents verification and paid Rs 60,000 required during verification process. Now, IIT-Dhanbad visit is scheduled next week.

Her misery doesn't stop there. She have been scaling the country through rail, road and air. "I have got a call from BITS, Goa campus. Here also I paid Rs 20,000 and Rs 10,000 in IIIT-Hyderabad," said Gaur, who is scheduled to visit Goa and Hyderabad in the last week of this month. She is also awaiting NITs counselling result followed by visits to some NIT campuses," said Gaur.

Bhilwara-based Shweta Kumari Sisodiya, a successful candidate who cleared JEE-Advanced with flying colours have has been running between IITs and Centrally-funded institutes to grab a seat in her desired branch.

She had to wade through rainwater to appear in IIT-Mumbai for documents verification from her native town in Bhilwara. "I was given a seat in IIT-Roorkee in Applied Mathematics which is not my favorite. I have to appear in ISRO counselling in New Delhi in July 21 while I am waiting for NIT counselling and have to rush in some other places," said Sisodiya.

Amit Ahuja, career counselor, Allen Career Institute said that students have been going through intense pressure while attending counselling. They are those successful candidates who have scored low ranks in JEE-Advanced and finding it difficult to get the desired branch in IITs.

"In a desperate move to get their desired branch, such students appear in the counselling of top NITs and other premier institutes like Delhi College of Engineering, Birla Institute of Technology, Pilani, IIIT Hyderabad and Delhi, Punjab Engineering college in Chandigarh to name a few."

Experts opined that ideally the government should centralized the counseling process of all 16 IITs, 30 NITs and other Centrally-funded institutes. "The authorities should award more time to students. Students from Rajasthan has to visit Mumbai for documents verification which is anyhow 1,000 kms from here, while not giving this responsibility to IIT-Jodhpur," said Ahuja.
