Two students move court to sort out anomaly in JEE (A)

Two Class 12 students in the city have approached the Madras high court, saying they had been pushed back in the rank list in the recently-held IIT-JEE advanced examination as their category had been changed.

One of them, S Kiran Kumar, said he had mentioned himself as belonging to the Other Backward Class (OBC) category, but claimed that someone changed this. This led to his being treated as a member of a forward community and pushed back in the final ranking list.

When contacted, Central Seat Allocation Board officials said sufficient time had been given to students facing such problems to rectify it. Several statements had been issued through the media in this regard, they said. "It is out of our hands now," one of them said.

Kiran Kumar had scored the required cut-off marks in the JEE (Mains) and was selected to appear for JEE (Advanced). "On July 3, when the JEE (Advanced) results were out, I was shocked," said Kiran Kumar, his voice choking. He said the category had been mentioned as 'none'. "Later, a teacher in my school said I had been treated as belonging to a forward community. My rank was 1,262," he added.

His father C D Suresh Kumar, an employee in the ICF, was even surprised. "How could it have happened? Officials in Delhi were unhelpful when I spoke to them over phone," he said adding that he was told he could get mired in legal problems if he tried to prolong the issue. "Had my son's category been mentioned as OBC, he might have got a rank between 700 and 800. Now we have lost hope." He said his son had scored 467 out of 500 in the CBSE class 12 examination in April.

Another student of a city school with a similar problem has also approached the high court seeking justice.
