JEE: Kiran seeks justice for Andhra Pradesh students

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy has urged the Centre to take steps to compute 20 percentile of the candidates who appeared for CBSE examinations by taking all the subjects into account instead of those of his/her stream. This alone will help Andhra Pradesh students who appeared for JEE-2013, he said.

Review of procedure sought

Mr. Reddy has written to Union Minister for HRD M. M. Pallam Raju, seeking a review of procedure being followed for admission into engineering colleges, including the suggestion to abolish weightage for Class XII marks and to select the candidates based on all-India exam only.

The procedure should be “transparent and rational” without giving any room for doubts among the candidates.

Anomalous situations

Referring to admission in NITs, he said the 40 per cent weightage being given to marks for Class XII exam was causing anomalous situations.

Two students from the State stood first and second in the country in Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) mains but their names did not figure even in the top 300 ranks due to the 40 per cent weightage given to the XII marks.

He said in the case of IITs, the top 20 percentile of XII class examination at 91.89 per cent for Andhra Pradesh was the highest in the country.

Consequently, many students who cleared the JEE (Advanced) exam and secured good marks, failed to get eligibility to join IITs as they obtained less than 91.89 per cent marks in the class XII exam. “This is highly discriminatory”.

Meanwhile, an official in the Chief Minister’s office said all the necessary arrangements had been made to commence admissions into the engineering colleges in the State, once the stay obtained by the engineering college managements over filling of “B” category seats was vacated.
