769 successful students refuse IIT seats

One major change that occurred after IITs online counselling this year is that many seats left vacant after first round JEE Advanced counselling. If we look into past several year some reserved seats are always unfilled but this year general seats are also vacant. Now this is major concern for IITs to think about it and find out main reason behind this. IITs are premier institute of India, what anyone will deny admission there. A total of 769 students, who got an opportunity to study in the premier institutes, refused IIT seats.
Possible reasons
–Students are not having confidence in New IITs
–Students do not want to grab a seat in un-popular streams
Till now hundreds of seats are available for all categories. Second allotment will start from today. Students who took admission in first round of seat allotment were offered upgradation before the second allotment. So, if a student with a ranking of 1,100 did not take the seat allotted, another with a lower ranking got that place (if he opted for that subject in the preference form).
Last year maximum number of seats left vacant at Indian institute of technology – BHU, but this year maximum vacant seats are in ISM Dhanbad.
Few years ago, IITs were not used to conduct second round of counselling beacuse only SC/ST seats were vacant who couldn’t cross cut off marks for entrance exam, but now situation is different. Students are already crossing cut off marks for entrance exam but they are not willing to join institute and that’s a serious concern for IITs nowadays.
