After the Central Board of Secondary Education declared the rank list of the Joint Entrance Examination JEE (Main) showing the importance of class XII board results, a buzz was seen among students aspiring to appear for JEE. The 60:40 ratio of JEE Main and Class XII results has already started giving them the jitters, leaving them confused over what to concentrate more, on coaching classes or in schools.
"The output of the new system, introduced by the CBSE, to get into top engineering institutes has proved to be quite disappointing. The city was witnessing a trend of many students opting for dummy schools in classes XI and XII, so that they could concentrate completely on their coaching classes, as in dummy schools, attendance is never an issue. However, if this new ratio system is going to continue in the JEE Main, students in 2014 are going to get into trouble," said Astha Kaushal, a class XII student residing in Sector 20, Chandigarh.
Some of the students believe they might have to devote one year solely in preparations for the JEE, as preparing for boards and JEE together would be a tedious task. "The class XII exams used to play no role in competitive exams, and therefore, children could concentrate completely on competitive exams. I think that was the best option. But if this ratio system prevails, many students will have to waste a year to prepare for JEE (Main) to get good ranks and admission into top engineering institutes, as not all want to get into IITs," said Sachin Palwal, a class XII student residing in Sector 38, Chandigarh.
Some even suggest that if the system continues, students in future must opt for other boards in class XII so that their low percentage proves beneficial. "I would suggest students to get into any other board and not CBSE until the time the class XII exams are going to hold weightage in the JEE (Main), as even if they score 80 per cent in other boards, it would prove beneficial for them, whereas in CBSE, 95 per cent too would slump their All India Rank," said Rahul Srivastav, a class XII student, who will appear for JEE (Mains) in 2014.
There are others who feel that to cut down complications, the CBSE must reduce the weightage given to board results.
"If the CBSE wants to continue this system, they should reduce the weightage given to board marks. The normalization process they have worked out for admission into National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and other central government technical educational institutions is turning out to be very complicated and disappointing for both the students and the parents," said Aarush Kapil, another class XII student residing in Panchkula, Sector 12.
