IIT-Madras ties up with IBM

IIT-Madras has signed an over $2 million deal with IBM for a high-performance computing (HPC) installation , a sign that some educational institutions in India are trying to substantially enhance their research capabilities.

HPC are computers clustered together with the help of high-speed network, software and storage and is used in areas where vast amounts of data need to be analysed.

IIT-Madras will use it for science and engineering research in areas including biomolecular simulations to understand protein structure and interaction with drug molecules, combustion and turbulence problems, structural engineering problems and molecular dynamics to understand material properties . HPC will improve the performance and accuracy of research outcomes.

"With this cluster, users have access to double the computing power they had till now. This will enable them to work on bigger data and increase the accuracy of the outcomes," said Sunil Kumar, professor of physics and the person in charge of HPC at IIT-Madras .

"These non-traditional areas are driving complexities and addressing new dimensions of problems that requires more compute power," said Subram Natarajan, director of the technical computing and systems solution centre for IBM India and South Asia.
