Merit mystery equation baffles students

The declaration of the merit list has not been able to dispel confusion among students about their scores and the merit marks required for admission into engineering courses.

Several students along with their parents are approaching the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) to clarify their merit calculation. Officials said that they were helpless because some students have not moved to eliminate discrepancies in their scores - these students' marks do not tally with the ACPC data.

The ACPC had on Monday declared the merit list of students without announcing their merit marks. "Several students complained that they had scored more marks than their standing in the merit list warranted," an official said.

The ACPC had put up a formula on its website; but even officials admitted that the four-step formula was tough to work out.

Earlier the formula was simple as students were to calculate 40% weightage for entrance examination and 60% for the board score. But since the state introduced a common merit list, students were forced to normalize the marks as the board marks for a Gujarat board student was calculated on 300 marks while that of a CBSE student was calculated on 240.

The ACPC had earlier this month sent two officials to the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkatta, to work out a process to normalize marks.

In view of the massive variations in the examination systems in the country, the ACPC has decided that for this year, marks of different boards will be normalized by equating percentile of the boards.
