JEE Main counselling blunder – HRD approves 95 additional NIT seats for year 2013-14

According to sources to cover CSAB software mistake during third round of seat allotment in JEE Main counselling HRD minister M.M. Pallam Raju has exercised special powers to create the additional seats. HRD ministry has approved 95 NIT additional seats for this year. These seats will be valid for the academic year 2013-14 only.
In JEE Main counselling third round of seat allotment by CSAB the 95 meritorious students were rejected and candidates below them got admission due to CSAB software mistake. This goof-up happened because the third phase counselling and spot admissions, held simultaneously.
NIT Rourkela director Sunil Kumar Sarangi said the 95 had been allotted seats in the counselling. They had the option to fill in choices for spot admission. The students ignored the seats offered in the counselling and preferred spot admissions as they were offered better streams.
The admission software, however, was designed in a way that if students rejected seats during counselling, they would not be eligible for admissions.
“The students did not make any mistake. The glitch was with the software which should have alerted the students before making them ineligible,” Sarangi said.
Of the 95 students offered the extra seats, Sarangi said around 40 had taken admission at NITs while the rest declined saying they have already enrolled elsewhere.
