The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has declared 64.3% as cut-off marks for the joint entrance examination (JEE) Advanced, which will be held on Sunday.
The Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) cut-off was 78.2%. According to the CBSE rules, only students scoring the same as or more than the cut-off may sit for JEE Advanced.
As many as 1.5 lakh students will be able to show up for the JEE Advanced for 2013. These students must be among those who are in the top 20 percentile of their respective school boards. Candidates from different categories will have different cut-off marks.
IIT’ans’ Pratishthan’s Durgesh Mangeshkar said, “It was a pleasant surprise that the cut-off this year for the state board has gone up compared to last year. Last year it was 61.7%.”
“The reasons could be varied as this year the students appeared for the exam based on revised syllabus. Secondly, compared to last year, this year the number of students appearing for the examination has gone down,” he said.
“This year, in the board results, there has been a drastic drop in the marks scored by the students above 80% or 90%, but at the same time students with lower marks have passed in science,” Mangeshkar elaborated.
The CBSE score is always higher, he added.
Meanwhile, the board in its statement mentioned that these cut-off marks are also applicable for Directorate of Science and Technology’s (DoST) Inspire scholarship. One percent of the state board toppers are eligible for this scholarship.
750 students to take exam
Nearly 750 students from Pune will appear for the JEE Advanced. The examination will begin at 9 am and finish at 5 pm. It is divided into two papers, which cover physics, chemistry and mathematics. The examination in the city will be conducted at four places.
