JEE Advance held at 8 centres in Kanpur

The students found Maths and Physics section as tough while taking the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Advanced 2013 which was held at the eight exam centres in the city on Sunday.

The other difficult aspect of the exam was that it was quite lengthy. The students claimed that the pattern of the paper was changed this year and the negative marking introduced this year made the things tough. The JEE Advanced 2013 was held at nine cities coming under IIT-Kanpur zone including Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra, Gorakhpur, Jhansi, Pantnagar in Uttarakhand, Bhopal, Gwalior and Jabalpur in MP. The exam passed by peacefully amid tight security arrangements to avoid the use of unfair means during the exam.

The JEE Advanced was held in two shifts. The students said that the Maths section in both the shifts and the Physics section in the first paper were difficult.

The students informed TOI that their thumb impression was taken during both the exam shifts. The invigilators issued admit cards to the students during their identification at the exam centres.

The students were asked to bring their downloaded admit cards along with them to the exam centres where they were matched with the admit cards issued at the centres.

About the pattern of the exam, Manish Kumar Gupta, a JEE advanced aspirants said there were 20 questions based on Maths, Physics and Chemistry each in the first paper. The paper was of 180 marks. In the second shift of the exam, which was held from 2 to 5 pm, the students had to solve 60 questions divided in three sections and each question carried three marks.

"If a student had practiced well from the previous year question papers, he would have been able to solve this question paper easily. Though my first paper did not go well and I am not much hopeful of my selection," said Manish.

Manish further added that multiple choice questions were tough and had negative marking. "In the first section there was no negative marking but in the second and the third section, for every wrong answer one mark was deducted. Each question in section one was of two marks while in section two and three every question was of four marks."

Anant Vijay Kushwaha, another exam aspirant said physics was relatively easier than Maths and Chemistry. Anant had scored 205 marks in JEE Mains, passing which was mandatory for appearing in JEE Advanced. He was hopeful of his selection in the JEE Advanced 2013.

Aishwarya Lodhi, another student who appeared for the exam said Maths was tough and added, "I had prepared well for this exam and did not feel much pressure. Now I am waiting for the results to be declared to know whether I qualified or not." Prayash Panda, who had scored 237 marks in JEE mains, said Maths was tough.

Talking to TOI, Ashish Kumar of Chibbramau, who had come to appear for the exam at BNSD Siksha Niketan said the pattern of the exam had changed including the negative marking introduced this year in the exam.

He said, "Till last year, negative marking was confined to only section one in the first paper but this year instead of section one, section two and three and all the sections in second paper had negative marking." He further added, "As in the multiple choice questions more than one answer to the given question paper seemed to be correct and due to negative marking I took more time in that section wasting my time."

Rishabh Purwar, who had scored 87% in class XII, CBSE board and 150 in the JEE mains, said that his second paper went quite well he was hopeful of his selection.

On the other hand, the private teachers providing coaching for JEE in the city claimed that the question paper was quite tough and the cut-off for JEE-Advanced would be between 120-140 marks.

Around 15,000 students appeared for the exam held in nine cities falling under the Kanpur zone. In the industrial city, around 2,700 students were registered for the JEE Advanced-2013 and more than 95% of the students who registered for the exam, took the exam.
