IIT-G Prof. suspended in charge of sending vulgar text messages to girl student

After inspection Indian institute of technology, Guwahati has issued a suspension notice against Lingaraj Sahoo, a professor in the biotechnology department for harassing a girl student by sending ‘vulgar’ text messages on her cellphone.
“In July end, the victim girl, along with her father, lodged a complaint against Sahoo at the office of IIT-G director Gautam Barua. Soon after receiving the complaint, the matter was referred to the WWC of IIT, which sought disciplinary action against Sahoo this month,” said Konwar a spokesman of IIT-G.
The girl student was a research scholar doing PhD under Sahoo when the complaint was lodged. But later, her research guide was changed. “It is confirmed that Sahoo sent a love proposal to his student through text messages from his mobile,” a senior police officer said.

95 Deserving Students To Get Seats In NITs On Account Of CSAB Glitch!

5 seats have been additionally added to the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) by the HRD ministry only for this academic year (2013-14) to accommodate those students who had been denied admission to the B.Tech courses due to the software glitch by the CSABwhich was in charge of the admissions to the NITs and CFTIs.
These 95 candidates had secured better places in the merit list but were left out of the seat allotment for no fault of their own. The problem occurred due to the software programming during the third phase of the CSAB Counselling. As a result, the students were not allotted seats even though they were deserving and meritorious..
These seats have been specially created for this academic year only. The HRD minister M.M.Pallam Raju has exercised his powers to create these seats thus ensuring justice to the students who have lost the seats. The HRD ministry specified that these additional seats were purely supernumerary and temporary in nature to be valid for this academic session as a one time measure in its letter to the CSAB Chairman and NIT Rourkela director Sunil Kumar Sarangi.

IITs Start Preparatory Courses for Unfilled Quota Seats!

The Indian Institutes of Technology have lowered the cut-offs for the reserved category students to fill up the mandatory quota seats and restarted the year long preparatory courses. This year though only few IITs are conducting these preparatory courses in association with the others.
Taking turns with the bridge programme, some of theIITs have outsourced to their counterparts. IIT Roorkee is holding these classes for their students and joining them are students from IIT-Delhi and IIT-Mandi. Similarly, IIT Madras will have students from IIT-Bombay, IIT-Hyderabad and IIT-Gandhinagar in addition to their own. IIT Kharagpur will train students of IIT-Patna and IIT-Bhubaneshwar along with its own students.
The Preparatory Courses of the IITs are in essential bridge courses for the reserved category students who do not make the grade in spite of the low cutoff marks. Such students are considered when there are not enough candidates to fill up the mandatory quota seats. The students then have to undergo a year long course called the “Preparatory Course”, to be able to be on par with the regular students.
For the year 2012, around 276 physically disadvantaged candidates and 200 scheduled tribe students will undergo the Preparatory Course at the various IITs
As per IIT-Bombay director Devang Khakhar, this year has seen fewer students for the preparatory course,  leading to the clubbing of resources across the IITs to avoid wastage of time, effort and money. Therefore the courses are being held in selected IITs on account of factors like faculty and space shortage that would be otherwise needed to hold them in the individual IIT campuses. This measure would ensure better use of the resources.
Students who undergo the IIT Preparatory Course are coached in Maths, Physics and Chemistry for a year and will have to appear for an internal exam after the year is up. They must join the institute where they have been originally allotted a seat after successful completion of the preparatory course.

No more KCET Mess says Karnataka CM

On occation of presenting report card of 100 days of his rule Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the Government is in process of implementing the provisions of a 2006 law to regulate admissions in Karnataka. If it happens COMEDK might be dissolved by this KCET plan.
Admission to various professional courses in Karnataka could be smoother and transparent from the next year. Also he highlighted the process will also make the professional courses cheaper.
The Karnataka CM said that the government will ensure all the laws are in place before the process of next CET-Common Entrance Test begins. He said they do understand the problems faced by the applicants during admission procedure.
Karnataka has a strong and powerful lobby in education sector which has often influenced the decisions. The CM also said he will ensure no such influence affects the right decisions.
At present, every year government and private colleges decide and reach concensus for fee structure and management quota seats. But if the new process is implemented fee for general merit list candidates and reservation category candidates will be uniform but different for each college.
Also there will be no Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (ComedK) exams or quota.
If the Karnataka CM ensures the provision under under Karnataka Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission and Determination of Fee) Act, 2006 are implemented for the next session of admission, COMEDK exam or quota  might be removed.

Chennai girl chitra invents low cost plastic to fuel conversion device

Reportedly a chennai girl Chitra Thiyagarajan has invented a device which converts plastic to fuel similar to diesel, after a series of tests in a sustained three year effort.
Apparently a similar device is available in china but the production costs are high and is a time consuming process, but chitra’s device is not expensive and generates fuel in just three hours.
The pyro-plant developed by chitra has two variants where a 5kg unit costs around Rs 75,000 while a 25 Kg variant costs Rs 3 Lakh and each kilogram of plastic produces 800 ml of diesel.
Indian Institute of Technology-Madras chemical engineering professor S Pushpavanam said the invention is feasible and could be used to produce fuel.

JEE Main counselling blunder – HRD approves 95 additional NIT seats for year 2013-14

According to sources to cover CSAB software mistake during third round of seat allotment in JEE Main counselling HRD minister M.M. Pallam Raju has exercised special powers to create the additional seats. HRD ministry has approved 95 NIT additional seats for this year. These seats will be valid for the academic year 2013-14 only.
In JEE Main counselling third round of seat allotment by CSAB the 95 meritorious students were rejected and candidates below them got admission due to CSAB software mistake. This goof-up happened because the third phase counselling and spot admissions, held simultaneously.
NIT Rourkela director Sunil Kumar Sarangi said the 95 had been allotted seats in the counselling. They had the option to fill in choices for spot admission. The students ignored the seats offered in the counselling and preferred spot admissions as they were offered better streams.
The admission software, however, was designed in a way that if students rejected seats during counselling, they would not be eligible for admissions.
“The students did not make any mistake. The glitch was with the software which should have alerted the students before making them ineligible,” Sarangi said.
Of the 95 students offered the extra seats, Sarangi said around 40 had taken admission at NITs while the rest declined saying they have already enrolled elsewhere.

IITs lowered the cut offs for category students

Reportedly this year IITs have restarted the preparatory courses of one year duration for students as all seats were not filled after final round of seat allotment. These seats are for reserved category students only. Also this year IITs have lowered the cut off for all category students.
Few IITTs have outsourced the preparatory course ,
  • For IIT-Delhi and IIT-Mandi, IIT Roorkee will conduct preparatory course
  • IIT Madras will conduct preparatory course for IIT-Bombay, IIT-Hyderabad and IIT-Gandhinagar.
  • IIT-Kharagpur will hold preparatory classes for IIT-Patna and IIT-Bhubaneswar too.

Dead body of IIT roorkee professor found on campus, suicide or murder?

Reportedly dead body of Ajay Kumar (60), senior professor in Electrical Computer Science department, IIT Roorkee was found on wednesday. This is still a mystry for police to identify whether this is suicide or murder case.
A senior professor in IIT said Kumar was often depressed due to his loneliness and had made an unsuccessful attempt to commit suicide two years ago. He said that Kumar’s wife Madhulika had committed suicide two years ago and his three daughters resided abroad.
Police has started investigations, and the body sent for post-mortem examination.
Professor was living alone in his official flat at the IIT campus

IIIT Hyderabad, BITS-Pilani and IIT-BHU listed in Google’s list of top 10 schools

It’s a matter of proud for us to see the names of three Indian technical schools in Google’s list of top 10 schools for period of 2005-2012. This list is based on number of students selected Google Summer of Code Selections held between 2005-2012.
Google started competition Google Summer of Code in 2005. The Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is an annual program, in which Google awards stipends (of US$5,000, as of 2013) to all students who successfully complete a requested free and open-source software coding project during the summer. The program is open to students aged 18 or over – the closely related Google Code-In is intended for students under the age of 18.
Eligibility and application process
The program invites students who meet their eligibility criteria to post applications that detail the software-coding project they wish to perform. These applications are then evaluated by the corresponding mentoring organization. Every participating organization must provide mentors for each of the project ideas received, if the organization is of the opinion that the project would benefit from them. The mentors then rank the applications and decide among themselves which proposals to accept. Google then decides how many projects each organization gets, and asks the organizations to mark at most that many projects accordingly.
In the event of a single student being marked in more than one organization, Google mediates between all the involved organizations and decides who “gets” that student. The other mentoring organization then unmarks the student and marks a new proposal for acceptance, or gives their slot back to the pool, after which it is redistributed.
Google has published the overall top 10 schools for the period 2005–2012. The list is as follows:

883 studetns out of top 1000 in JEE Advanced are from Private schools

Akshaya Mukul, TNN Aug 3, 2013, 05.04AM IST
(Female students, CBSE figures…)
NEW DELHI: Faced with widespread criticism of the normalization method in JEE Mains, CBSE has now claimed that due to the new pattern, representation of students from rural backgrounds as well as of girl students has shown remarkable improvement.
In 2013, there were 136 students with rural background among the top thousand rankers. In 2012, there were only 90 students from rural India. Urban student representation went down to 864 this year from 910 in 2012. Rural representation also showed gradual growth among first two, three and four thousand rank holders. Among the top 5,000 rankers, there were 861 students from rural background. In percentage terms, 17.22% students among the top 5,000 were from rural India compared to 13.4% last year. Urban representation among the top 5000 came down to 82.78% in 2013 from 86.6% last year.
Female students, CBSE figures showed, increased their presence among the toppers. This year, among the top thousand rankers, there were 136 female students, and 749 among the top 5,000 rankers. Male representation among the top thousand rankers came down to 864 (86.4%) in 2013 compared to 904 (90.4%) last year and 924 (92.4%) in 2011.
Students from government schools are also beginning to make a slow but steady presence among the top rankers. But the rate is slower. Last year, 89 government school students were in the first one thousand. In 2013, it went up to 117. In the top 5,000, there were 624 students from government school background, up from last year's 545. Private school students continue to dominate. This year, of the first one thousand rankers, 883 students were from private schools, a marginal decline from last year's 911.
Meanwhile, the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, which had put out a detailed story about the evolution of normalization method, removed the link from its website under pressure from the HRD ministry. But the damage was done as the link has been downloaded and is all over social media sites.

GATE 2014: Some Myths and Many Facts about M.Tech

The frenzy for GATE 2014 is just about to start on September 2, 2013 when the online GATE 2014 applications will be available. To be conducted by IIT Kharagpur for 2014, GATE 2014 will be the gateway to many aspiring engineers and would be scientists to join the M.Tech or MS by Research courses.

Who wants to write the GATE Exam?

It is commonly known that the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is the entrance examination to give if:
  • One wanted to pursue Post Graduation namely M.Tech or MS by Research.
  • If one wanted a good secure job in the Public Sector Units (PSUs) Check this

Some Facts about GATE 2013:

To get an idea for GATE 2014, one can check the facts and figures of GATE 2013. The official stats say that 12,00,728 students registered for GATE 2013 and only 82.02% namely 9,84,855 candidates actually appeared for it. Now for the crucial part- only 13.88% ie. 1,36,699 candidates qualified for it.

Other PG Entrance Exams
:
Many universities and institutes take the GATE scores but some have their own exams. Common ones are
AP PGCET: Conducted by the University College of Engineering, Osmania University on behalf of the APSCHE, this exam offers admissions to the PG courses in colleges of Andhra Pradesh.
Karnataka PGCET: Conducted by the Karnataka Examination Authority, the entrance offers admissions to the various PG courses across the state of Karnataka.
PGEE: Conducted by the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, this exam allows admissions to the M.Tech programmes at the institute.
VITMEE: VIT University conducts this for selection and admissions to the M.Tech programmes at the university.
TANCET: Conducted by Anna University, this exam is for the admissions to the PG courses in Tamilnadu.

Benefits of M.Tech:

  • A carry forward of the technological knowledge that comprises B.Tech can happen with M.Tech. Part research and part study makes it more lucrative rather than simply studying which is what happens for most undergraduate programs.
  • Another fact is that students pursuing M.Tech are generally paid stipend which may be low by industry standards but covers up expenses and is pretty useful unlike undergraduation when students are completely dependent on their parents.
  • Expenses of studying M.Tech is also comparatively low with around 40K per semester on an average inclusive of hostel fees and other expenses.
  • Good Placements are one benefit but only if the candidates have good grades. Most companies do prefer good and technologically sound people who are accustomed to deadlines and tight work schedules.

M.Tech Courses and Quality of Education
:
The GATE 2014 lists out 22 papers for which candidates can appear and pursue M.Tech or MS. As the figures for GATE 2013 show, it is not at all easy for candidates to qualify. The entrance examinations to M.Tech courses are by themselves tough.
A common myth is that quality of education is not good especially for M.Tech students other than IITs. There are questions about the infrastructure too. First and foremost, yes, the IITs do have excellent faculty but so do the many other colleges/universities. The NITs and other centrally funded institutes possess good faculty too. Many private universities have made it a point to offer good facilities and teaching faculty. Some states have well established deemed universities as well as private colleges that possess good infrastructure.
Note: An important point to be noted is that the institute to study in definitely matters. Since not everyone can get into an IIT, M.Tech aspirants should also keep other options open after careful research.

Is M.Tech too tough?
M.Tech improves the technical knowledge of candidates while preparing them with a practical aspect through research. To gain all this, candidates have to work hard. Though factors that play a role are the effort s of the candidates, the courses chosen, projects done and such. Good scores denote the strength of the candidate in the chosen field and that is never easily available. To say that studying will be rigorous or too easy is generalizing and not at all applicable to everyone.
In fact, the truth is that by the time a candidate reaches the post graduate level, the understanding of the various subjects and their role becomes clearer. An M.Tech qualification comes with better understanding of the subjects and application of the same to the projects done.

Can M.Tech Qualifications Assure Good Placements
?
The myth that M.Tech qualified people are found to be teaching only is just what it is - A Myth. Most professors who teach at the top universities and good institutes are people who have chosen teaching as their careers and many have become guiding forces for their students. The other fact is that they also have further qualifications in the form of Ph.D which they do to improve their skill sets in turn bestowing the additional knowledge to their students.
The IITs and many top institutes have an excellent track record for placements of M.Tech qualified people. The deterrent as it may seem comes with the fact that placements are never separate for the Post graduates or the Undergraduates, though the preference is always for the post graduates. Still, with a slight advantage of qualification and good scores, a good placement can be achieved with better chances of growth on account of the M.Tech qualification.
It is also a fact that candidates have to clear the selection criteria of the companies that come in to recruit as per their requirements. Merely possessing the M.Tech qualification does not give any candidate an advantage.

Further studies after M.Tech?
Candidates who are interested in further studies can go in for Ph.D in India or abroad. Good qualified people are appreciated by all universities and it is only to their advantage to have a well qualified M.Tech candidate researching for them. The R & D area is very much under rated and under developed in the country. Many companies are seriously recruiting people with Ph.Ds for their R & D division. So a good placement is one advantage along with a good career chart.

Therefore it is advisable to go for an M.Tech only if one is serious about it in terms of study, effort and time. Candidates who do so end up with qualifications that are sought out not just in India but abroad too.
