New IIT admission pattern is good, said state HRD minister Shashi Tharoor

According to state HRD minister Shashi Tharoor New pattern for IIT admission is good as it takes board marks into consideration.
In a written reply submitted to Lok Sabha Shashi Tharoor said “Percentiles are a good basis of comparing different boards and they are non-discriminatory.”
“They take into account the variations in examinations conducted by different boards. Based on this year’s examination data, the cut-off percentile score for top 20 percentile varies from one board to another. Since different boards evaluate differently, percentiles have been used to ensure a fair comparison of students belonging to different boards,” he said.
What’s new IIT Pattern
->To get IIT admission is now a two tier process
JEE Main + JEE Advanced
->Eligibility for JEE Advanced – Only top 1.5 lakh students in JEE Main examination including all categories will be eligible for JEE Advanced.
->Eligibility for JEE Advanced will be based on only JEE Main score, board marks will not play any role here
->To get admission into IITs, merit list will be based on JEE Advanced score only but it will be subject to 20 percentile eligibility condition
Eligibility for IIT admission – Even if student has done well in JEE Advanced but not under top 20 percentile in his respective boards, he will not be eligible to get admission into IITs
