Pen & paper still rule JEE aspirants' minds

A majority of aspirants from Indore for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission in the country's centrally funded engineering institutes have opted for conventional pen and paper type offline examination.

This year the JEE (mains) will be held in two phases- offline and online.

Over 36,000 students from different parts of Madhya Pradesh will be in Indore to appear in the JEE offline examination next week.

The offline examination is scheduled on April 7 which will have a majority of students appearing in the entrance test in the 57 examination centers in Indore alone.

Sahodaya Indore cluster chairperson Sriniwas Rao said, "Students in Indore are less tech savvy. That is one of the reasons why maximum students have opted for the offline mode of examination".

The online JEE examination will be held for over two weeks in urban centers like Bhopal, Delhi between April 8 and 25.

Educationists believe that the trend of appearing in the online mode of entrance examination is yet to pick up pace. However, it will gain momentum in coming years.

JEE Indore coordinator and DPS principal Ashok Sachdeva said, "The online entrance examination is not very popular this year. A majority of students will write the exam in offline mode. But the choice is changing and in coming years, the online trend may come at par with offline ".

As per the revised norm of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), students will have just one opportunity to get admission in IITs, NITs and other central institutes through the combined JEE (mains) examination.

There are only three offline city centers in Madhya Pradesh including Indore, Gwalior and Jabalpur.

IIT-I looks to improve placement scenario

Struggling to place its students, IIT Indore is now eying to improve its placement tally through proposed Industry-academia conclave to be held on April 13-14.

Ongoing placements on the IIT's campus reveal that all the institutions set up between 2008 and 2009 are witnessing poor placement scenario. Among these, IIT Jodhpur and IIT Indore are the worst performers. Till now, only 70 per cent students of the maiden batch of IIT Indore have got job offers, with this institution positioned at second lowest rank among the new IITs in terms of placement. IIT Jodhpur stands at the bottom with just 60 per cent placement record.

Out of 100+ batch of IIT Indore, about 35 students are still unemployed and now the institution is hoping that the conclave that will bring together experts from the industry and R&D organization may help in getting job offers to them. Final list of placement is expected to be released after the conclave.

According to an IIT professor, many potential recruiters did not turn up for the campus placement due to economic slowdown.

Placement officer of IIT Indore, SK Vishwakarwa, said conclaves like this certainly help in placement as it acts as a bridge between industry and students. He said many big companies like Intel and others are coming for conclave. He added that last year the conclave was of great help in placements and they are expecting better result this year. Name of the participating companies and speakers will be made public soon.

Conclave will have discussion on the theme like exploring research and consultancy avenues between IIT Indore and corporate organizations in order to augment the growth trajectory of India in terms of scientific outcomes, and determine plausible solutions to bridge the gap between academic training and corporate expectation.

Organizers of the conclave claimed that the event will be beneficial to both companies and academia, as it would provide an appropriate platform for corporate organizations to present their views on topics of research and development that would provide communal benefit to both the society and active R and D organizations.

Interactive sessions between technical representatives from corporate organizations and IIT faculty members will help strengthen research and consultancy association and stimulate symbiotic partnerships. In addition, IIT students will be able to gauge industry requirements and determine the skill set that companies seek which in turn would assist companies in fostering prospective employees.

Glimpses of pol architecture at IIT Gandhinagar's new campus

The new campus of Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGn) near Palaj village on the banks of Sabarmati river in Gandhinagar will give a feel of the old city’s pols. The eco-friendly college grounds will be spread over 400 acres of land.

To bring a unique style of space management and a sense of community, different architecture firms worked to design the IITGn campus. The famous courtyard style, jaali ventilation system and pol streets, among other features, will be recreated for the campus.

The plan of the new academic block, students’ hostel, teaching staff residence and the master plan were unveiled on Thursday. Highlights of the plan were a combination of modern features as well as the usage of pol architecture.

Experts involved in the planning said, the students’ hostel area and teachers’ residential quarters would have elements like a courtyard where students can meet up, have the characteristic Gujarati ‘cha’ and chat up, along with an additional amphitheatre-like space. This will give them space to not only mingle with each other but also learn freely.

Rajeev Kathpalia of Vastu Shilpa Consultants said that the jaali used in old pol houses was for adequate ventilation and sunlight, so they decided to use it for the college building as well. The permanent campus will also give access to Sabarmati river by developing a ghat leading to a promenade on the bank.

Director of the institute, Prof SK Jain, said that the process also saw the involvement of students and faculties apart from noted architects. The campus will be an eco-friendly one. It will have a rainwater harvesting system and a sewer treatment plant which will use the recycled water for toilet and horticultural purposes.

Several prominent architectural firms including Green Campus Development Consortium New Delhi, Mitimitra Consultants Pvt Ltd Pune, Vastu Shilpa Consultants Ahmedabad, HCP Design Planning and Management Pvt. Ltd. Ahmedabad and Design and Planning Counsel Pvt. Ltd. Ahmedabad were involved in designing different parts of the campus.

HRD to push for single body for JEE, NET

The Union human resource development ministry will seek the opinion of state education ministers next week on the feasibility of a centralised testing body responsible for conducting JEE, AIEEE, NET, CAT, CMAT and GATE. The meeting will also deliberate on the provision for allowing students to write such a test more than once in a year.

The proposal is scheduled to come up for discussion at the Central Advisory Board of Education (the highest advisory body on educa tion) meet attended by state education ministers on April 2 in the national capital.

The proposed agency is expected to deliver the national-level examinations through a dedicated group of professionals, thereby sparing teachers from the testing exercise. It will conduct research for preparing question papers, administering and holding examinations.

If the proposal gets passed, holding tests and assessment under the body is likely to become prerequisite for the public and private sector engineering, medical and other colleges, universities and institutions for admission and recruitment.

While the CBSE has prepared a model with an objective, structure and functions for the body, the government intends to start in a small way by conducting the UGC-NET exam as early  as next year. HRD minister M.M. Pallam Raju has said that joining the body would not be binding.

43% of teaching slots in IITs lying unfilled

At a time when 'skill shortage' is frequently bemoaned by industry, nearly half of all teaching positions in IITs and over half in NITs are lying vacant. That's the sobering fact revealed recently in response to a question in the Lok Sabha. It's not only newly created IITs and NITs that face shortage. Old IITs have over 40% of their teaching positions vacant and the situation in old NITs is even worse with 57% of faculty jobs finding no takers.

In eight older IITs (including IT BHU and Roorkee University - now converted into IITs) the sanctioned strength of teaching staff is 5,356 but there are only 3,158 teachers in regular positions, resulting in 41% vacant seats. With 57% vacancy, IIT-BHU has the worst figures. It is followed by IIT-Delhi (50%), IIT- Kharagpur (48%) and IIT-Guwahati (42%). For the remaining four IITs, the vacant teaching positions range between a low of 19% of the sanctioned strength for IIT-Kanpur and 38% for IIT Roorkee.

The numbers in NITs are even worse. Of the 5,891 sanctioned teaching posts in 20 old NITs, only 3,083 are filled by regulars. The 48% gap between required and employed teachers is much higher than vacancies in the IITs. NITs at Warangal, Patna, Srinagar, Jamshedpur, Kurukshetra, Agartala and Raipur have over 50% vacancies in teaching positions. NITs at Calicut, Silchar and Rourkela are the only institutes where vacancy is less than 40%.

Considering the shortage of academic staffs in old and reputable colleges, one would assume the condition of newly created institutes would be worse. Yes and no. Data throws up some surprises. Four of the eight new IITs are on a par or even better than most of the older institutes. IIT-Hyderabad has only 1% of its teaching positions vacant while the corresponding figures are 26%, 46% and 57% for IIT Patna, Indore and Ropar respectively. The remaining four new colleges have more than 60% vacancy while IIT-Bhubaneshwar doesn't have a single regular teacher against a sanctioned strength of 90.

Once again, the new NITs do even worse. There isn't a single regular teacher in the 10 new NITs. According to the NIT Act and IIT Act, these institutions are declared as institutes of national importance and government spends thousands of crores of rupees to encourage technical education in the country. For 2013-14, the budget estimates an expenditure of Rs 3,670 crore on IITs and of Rs 1,719 crore on NITs. If these institutes are in such a pitiable condition, one shudders to think of what the state of other government-run engineering colleges would be.

The parliament question inquiring about the shortage of faculty in NITs and IITs was answered on March 13, 2013 and the ministry noted that the main reason for the shortage is lack of PhD candidates in engineering. It also observed that a majority of students prefer corporate jobs over the teaching profession.

To make up for the shortage, institutes are resorting to contracts, adjunct, visiting faculty and online mode of teaching. It was also recently reported that the government is planning to engage trainee teachers who will be selected from the top 15% of students from these institutes.

JEE Main 2013 – Free accomodation for students appearing for offline mode

JEE Main 2013 is scheduled to be held on 7th April. It seems that this year state government is also trying hard to make students experience as smooth as possible. Its good to see that government is thinking about students also. Reportedly there is only one offline centre in Orissa state for JEE Aspirants appearing for offline mode and around 20,000 students have registered themselves in orissa state for JEE Main 2013 offline.
On keeping this mind government has requested several voluntary organizations to provide dormitory accommodation with food at nominal charges or free of cost. The decision was taken in a meeting of various voluntary organizations and associations convened by Rourkela ADM Rabindra Nath Mishra on Monday evening. “We have made an appeal to all concerned to ensure smooth stay for the students and their guardians during the examination here,” said Mishra
According to sources, all hotels and lodgings in the city have been booked for April 6 and 7. Many small and medium hotels are also making temporary dormitory arrangements for the students, on these two days.
Bus and auto operators have been asked not to take advantage of the rush and refrain from levying extra charges. The bus route chart, covering all examination centers, was also discussed in the meeting.

Majority of students will appear for JEE Main offline mode

Finally time to face the monster is near, JEE main in scheduled to be held in maonth of april. All the preparations are done. CBSE will conduct JEE Main offline on 7th april and online between 8th-25th april. Reportedly majority of students have registered for offline mode this year. Approximately 12.82 lakh JEE aspirants have applied to take the JEE to be held in 112 cities. According to sources 1.74 lakh students will take the JEE Main online.
For the first time marks of the XII class will be added before preparing final maeri sheet of JEE Main exam. 40% weightage will be given to XII board marks and 60% weightage to JEE Main score.
In most states baord exams are over and 100Marks wishes all the aspirants for their preparation.

Will CBSE students be at a disadvantage over students from other boards?

After CBSE class XII maths paper many students and parents are pointing their fingers towards CBSE , why? Its all becuase many students think that maths paper set by CBSE was totally unexpected and pattern was not same as it was in Maths sample paper given by CBSE. Students didn’t perform well as he/she was expecting, Most of the students are complaining that most of the question were tweaked from direct pattern. Some students are also challenging that paper was very lengthy and 3 hrs time limit was too short to complete this paper. Many complaints have been already logged and CBSE is forced to think about it.
Parents are also much worried that CBSE students will be at a disadvantage over students from other Boards as this year 40% weightage will be given to XII board marks for admission to engineering colleges across the country. Most of the parents think that there is a need to reconduct the examination or at least the evaluation needs to be a bit lenient

CBSE will conduct improvement exam for maths if difficlty was higher than Model paper

After many requests from students and parents Central board of secondary education board has finally agreed to set an expert committee for maths paper. The expert committee will test all tough questions in detail with reference to model papers prepared by CBSE. If difficulty level of the paper is higher than model papers, the Board will consider holding “improvement exams” for these students based on the recommendations of the committee.

In a communication sent to schools, the CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi said the subject experts will soon meet and review the question papers to find out whether the questions given were from outside the syllabus and in deviation of the ‘blueprint’ followed by the Board with regard to difficulty-level of questions.

Important notice JEE Main aspirants – Change in centre allocation

As per an official notice released by CBSE due to some administrative reasons some changes have done in centre allocation for some candidates. These candidates can download their revised admit card from JEE Main official website.

CBSE requested to take some immediate action soon for XII Maths Paper

CBSE XII board exam, mathematics paper was held on 25th Mar 2013. Many students are complaining that around 35% questions were diffcult and teacher are also supporting them. They are saying that paper was not for average students. One question carrying 6 marks was also wrong in this paper and many students wasted their time to solve this question.
In Kerala state a student must have at least 50% marks in mathematics to be eligible for admission to engineering course in the State but now it seems a tough task for many students in the state. Kerala government has sent a letter to CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi in this regard and requested CBSE to find the best way in interest of students.
“The grievances lodged by the association and others from across the country will be forwarded to the experts,” said Indira Rajan, State general secretary of the Kerala CBSE School Managements Association.
Currently if one students pass in one subject but marks are not satisfactory, he will have to wait one full academic year to take the improvement exam. Indira Rajan, has requested CBSE to allow students for improvement exam in a matter of months giving them the opportunity to cross the 50 per cent marks barrier and have a crack at engineering course.

New IITs Vs BITS Pilani, which is better and why?

Take a look at the “Top Engineering Colleges” rankings, in any newspaper or on any website, the first half of the lot is always occupied by the IITs, 2-3 by some other colleges, and then again, you’ll see an IIT there.
On a general note, you do hear comparison between different engineering colleges, but comparing any, with the members of the elite league of IITs is totally unheard of.
In 2008, Government of India added nine new institutes in this league:
  • IIT Bhuvaneshwar
  • IIT Gandinagar
  • IIT Hyderabad
  • IIT Indore
  • IIT Rajasthan
  • IIT Mandi (HP)
  • IIT Patna
  • IIT Ropar
Upon introduction of these institutes as IITs, no doubt, the dreams of a majority of twelfthies to be an IITian could now be achieved, but the question that this phenomenon generated was quite worrying:
Are these institutes really that good?
On the other hand, you must have seen one more institute in the list of the “Top 10”, i.e. BITS Pilani.
No matter, which organization takes the survey; this institute’s gotta be there, even beating some of the older IITs, implying, obviously, it has some metal.
So, the worrying question becomes even more worrying, adding to it,
Is the tag of being an ‘IITian’ by getting into the new ones and ignoring all the other institutions, really worth it?
Well, if you are struggling with the same question, 100marks is there to usher you out. We’ll ease your decision by comparing the new IITs with BITS, Pilani, and no, we are not biased towards any.
Although IIT Bombay, Delhi etc are the best ones, no one’s arguing about it, but it was not late after the introduction of the new ones that the Government of India realized, it wasn’t such a great idea. In fact, the Fmr. Dy. Director of IIT Indore (a new IIT) once admitted in an interview that “There definitely was no need to open all IITs simultaneously because there is always resource crunch to efficiently fund eight IITs in addition to seven older ones”.
They say, it’s best known when experienced firsthand, so, who else can be the better judge but the Dy. Director. He even added that “It is difficult to find the right faculty so quickly”.
On the other hand, if we talk about BITS, Pilani, it’s the best private institution in the country. Although, not a government college, it pips a majority of them in terms of all round performance.  The college exposes you to world class education, along with an all round development, and a damn fat paying job.
Since our stand must be very clear by now, here is the biggest advantage that BITS holds against the new IITs:
THE FACULTY
Any logical mind would argue how can the students excel if the teachers are not, leave up to the mark, but available!
The new IITs have an acute shortage of faculty.
“Faculty selection at the new IITs is a serious issue. I was highly disappointed in the work the faculty carried out. The most available item was student. There was nothing else – place, director, faculty etc,” an official at IIT-Indore alleged.
While BITS Pilani already has an international infrastructure, excellent faculty and best placements, the new IITs are struggling on one or the other aspect.  The new institutes are on a bumpy ride to achieving the levels of ‘IIT’ excellence which is evident from the latest HRD ministry data.
So, until and unless the new IITs stabilize and prove themselves, opting for them even if you can go for BITS is HIGHLY PROHIBITED.

Google is the most desired employer for engineering students in India.

Engineering students prefer IT jobs, Google most desired employer: Nielsen

New Delhi: The Information Technology sector is the most preferred choice for India’s engineering students, with Google, Microsoft and Infosys emerging as the top three most desired employers among them, according to a survey by market insights and information provider Nielsen.
As per the Nielsen’s Campus Track Technology School survey 2012, the Class of 2013 is looking at a starting salary of over Rs 11 lakh per annum, a 20 percent rise from the previous batch, where the average expected starting salary was Rs 9.3 lakh.
“The IT story in India is going strong, and with the increasing focus on personal technology, the sector and its different specialisations are still favoured by students,” Nielsen India Executive Director Dinesh Kapoor said in a statement.
There is also a resurgence of interest in core sectors like power and energy that has been observed which is also a good indicator for the economy, he added.
According to the survey, the top five preferences of engineering students were IT Services (35 percent), followed by IT products (28 percent), energy (21 percent), automobile and ancillary sector (20 percent) and IT semiconductor (19 percent).

Some of the other sectors that were highlighted are telecom (18 percent), power (18 percent ) and management consultancy (17 percent), it added.
The survey took responses of over 2,500 students in July- August 2012 across in 73 technology colleges in India to measure and monitor their attitudes and perceptions towards career preferences and potential recruiters.
As far as employer of choice was concerned among the engineering students, Google topped the list, with Microsoft in 2nd and Infosys 3rd, the survey said.
TATA Consultancy Services was placed 4th and IBM came 5th. Social networking website Facebook featured at number 6, followed by recruiters in the core sectors of energy and power — BHEL (7th), L&T (8th) and NTPC (10th).
When it came to salaries, the current students had higher expectations.
“Students today are very focused from the moment they enter college, and have a view on their long term goals and career aspirations. With the increasing options now available, aspirants want to go beyond the immediate boundaries of their courses, and explore opportunities that might not have been available to them some years ago,” Kapoor said.
More than half of the respondents from the Batch of 2013 have expressed an intent to move out of their first job within three years of joining, for further studies, or other career opportunities, the survey said.

8,000 more engineering seats in Gujarat

Here is some good news for students appearing for the HSC (science) examination this year - a good 8,000 additional seats in engineering streams like civil, automobile and mechanical will be available in self-financed colleges from academic year 2013. The seats have recently been approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).

Last year, there were 55,726 degree engineering seats and 5,005 degree pharmacy seats in the state. With the current rise, the total number of seats has increased to 68,731 in engineering and pharmacy courses.

Following this, almost every student in the A group with Maths, Physics and Chemistry subjects will stand better chance if he just manages to pass the board exams. This too has been made easy by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) which declared that students need only aggregate 133 marks out of 400 to pass. They do not necessarily need to pass each and every semester exam.

Education officials said that last year over 8,000 seats had remained vacant mainly in less preferred branches while there was heavy rush in branches like civil, mechanical and automobile engineering which promise better job prospects. "It has been communicated to us that 8,000 additional seats have been approved by AICTE in different colleges which had applied for the same," said Janak Khandwala, member secretary of the Self-Financed Engineering College Management Association.

Member of the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) M N Patel said that more seats would mean more options for the students. This year, the rise in seats which were earlier communicated in June or July has been approved well in advance for the benefit of the students.

IIT-I team to work on Big Bang at CERN

Becoming the second IIT of the country to be associated with world's largest Physics laboratory- CERN, a team from Indian Institute of Technology, Indore (IIT-I) will leave for CERN in May to contribute in the ongoing research work on the Big Bang Theory.

A two member team of IIT-I comprising Prof Raghunath Sahoo and research scholar Aditya Nath Mishra will be involved in finding out the origin and evolution of universe through experiments associated with the Big Bang Theory.

The team will be at CERN for a duration of two months initially.

Prof Sahoo who established a high energy experimental group at IIT-I is one of the five members who are a part of the ALICE collaboration with CERN under which theywill be carrying out the research work.

"Our research is associated with the Big bang theory and we will be involved in the detector making for the forward calorimeter in ALICE," Prof Sahoo told DNA.

The team including two professors and three research scholars will be associated with the CERN for the next five years.

"Our research will also include physics data analysis which will result in scientific publication and help in understanding the origin and evolution of the ," Prof Sahoo said.

The central government has accepted institute's Rs 2.6 crore proposal for this research work, Prof Sahoo said.

Prof Sahoo has been associated with CERN since his graduation when he participated in the test beam experiment at CERN in 2003.

Six B. Tech students of IIT-I have also applied for a scholarship at CERN.

"This will give an exposure to our research scholars and other students," he said. The Big Bang theory is a cosmological model that describes the early development of the universe.
