The expert committee set up to work out a fair method for "normalising" Class XII board results across 29 different school boards to ensure a level playing field for the reworked Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), 2013, is learnt to be considering four options.
As per the reworked JEE for admission to engineering institutes, 40 per cent weightage will be given to Class XII board results in JEE (Main), which is set to be held on April 7. The JEE (Advanced) will be held on June 3.
The committee, which has experts from the Indian Statistical Institute, CBSE and IIT Kanpur among others, is set to announce the method to "normalise" the Class XII board results by March-end.
The four options on the table are: increase percentile proportionately across school boards; equate mean marks of all boards; equate mean as well as standard deviation across boards; or use the more complex but sophisticated "Rasch model" that can effectively measure variables and will be able to take into account difficulty level of different subjects.
The committee is currently assessing these methodologies on the 2011-12 data of board results of 3.5 lakh students from eight different school boards.
Amid stiff opposition, the HRD ministry, then led by Kapil Sibal, had last year announced a new common entrance format for admission to IITs, NITs and IIITs from 2013. This new exam will have two components — JEE Main (for screening) and JEE Advanced (for the final IIT merit list).
The biggest challenge is to "normalise" school board marks, to ensure that a student under the Uttar Pradesh school board or Tamil Nadu school board is on par with a student from the CBSE/ ICSE board when the 40 per cent weightage to board marks is accorded.
