Class XII student ends life hours before exam

A 16-year-old boy who was to appear in class XII ( science) fourth semester exam was found dead in his room in Ghatlodia. He had hanged himself. Police suspect pre-exam stress may have driven him over the edge.

According to Ghatlodia police, Jay Soni, a resident of Vasukinandan Flats, had hanged himself in his room at his residence before 6.30 am on Monday. Jay, a student of Mangaldeep High School in Nirnaynagar, was preparing for the exams for past month.

"According to his father Rajendra Soni's statement, Jay used to stay up late for the preparations in a separate room," said a Ghatlodia police official. "When he started studying after dinner on Sunday, Jay was a bit apprehensive about his overall and specific preparation for Monday's mathematics paper. He was weak in that subject. He, however, assured his parents that he was going good and would score well."

Thus, when Rajendra Shah woke up at 6.30 am, he saw light in Jay's room. Worried, he pushed the door and found Jay hanging from the ceiling fan. The investigators who went to Soni's residence on Monday talked to some of the relatives.

"We could not gather much details due to mourning but got to know that Jay was a good student and had scored well in the previous exams," said the official. "He, however, had been restless for a couple of days."

Alka Patel, the principal of Mangaldeep High School, told TOI that the exams for class XII have become more difficult due to multiple preparations. "The student not only prepares for the semester exam but also for exams such as JEE and NEET that come soon after the board exams," Patel said. "What I want to convey to the students is - this is not the last exam of your life and there are countless exams and many who have scored only average marks or failed, have done well in other spheres of life."
