With increase in demand of petrol added with increase in global oil prices, a category of professionals have come under picture known as Petroleum engineers. They spend their careers searching for reservoirs of oil, developing methods to efficiently extract it from the earth without damaging the surrounding environment and process it in to user usable products.
But Petroleum engineering degrees are not very popular in India because of fewer universities offering admissions to core petroleum engineering and less awareness among parents and students. Another reason is that most people think that Petroleum Engineering is a sub branch of Chemical Engineering as there are courses like Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals and Fuel Engineering but in reality it’s completely a separate branch of engineering which is famous enough in foreign universities. Nevertheless this scenario is going to change very soon because of present demand.
During the first year of study in petroleum engineering students usually learn about basic engineering methods and techniques which are often common for all branch of engineering and from second year very specialized courses in petroleum engineering are offered that include Reservoir Studies, Gas Hydrates, Environmental Impact of Petroleum Fluid Operation, Characterization of Crude oil, Development of Computer Software, Polymer Synthesis and Characterization, Profile Modification, Development of Novel Fracturing Fluid, Characterization and Separation of Oil-Water Emulsion, etc.
In this course student learn subsurface activities related to the production of hydrocarbons, which can be either crude oil or natural gas. The two key area of learning will be oil exploration and processing of
crude oils. Oil refining and distribution are also discussed in this course of engineering.
And now the most important question, what after getting the bachelor degree?
Petroleum engineering course offer wonderful job opportunities at global and domestic levels. Opportunities in oil and gas sector are ample in Middle East with very high annual income packages. Higher education opportunities are good all over America and Europe too. Average salary depends upon different colleges (when getting recruited through campus placement) and companies but it roughly comes around 6-7 lacks annually.
