Students appearing for All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) and SSC are in a fix as the examination date is clashing with the civic election on April 7.
A local parents' body recently raised this issue with the governor. Ajay Rai, general secretary, Parents' Association, expressing anguish over the administration's decision, said this should not have happened as the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announce the date for AIEEE in August 2012. The municipality election date was announced last week.
"It's a rule that before setting dates for election, they (administration) should check whether any examination or festival is on the same day. But dates were fixed without checking anything. How unconcerned can the administration be regarding the future of students," said Rai. On the election day, (police) checking takes place, vehicles are prohibited (in many areas) and cases of violence are also likely. All these will create trouble for candidates whose focus will be on reaching the exam centre on time," he added.
Total number of polling booths is 1,830, of which 126 booths have been set up in 18 schools. Thirteen of the 18 schools are on the list of AIEEE centres and five schools have centres of SSC examination.
State election commissioner S D Sharma, however, sought to allay any confusion. "(I) don't know why such confusion is spreading. After such reports I also asked the deputy commissioner and officials in the HRD department about the examination centres and clash of polling booths but they informed us that there was no such problem," he said. "It's our duty to check such things before setting the dates.
There is no coordinating authority of such exams due to which such problems arise. I assure that there will be no inconvenience to students as well as guardians," he said, adding that if needed, the polls will be organized on some other dates.
